Judas, on a more serious side. If you are using Win 98 or Win ME you can use the Windows cleanup utility. Under accessaries, tools, click disk clean up. If you are using XP, I'm not sure how to do it.....but I think XP has a program similar. If you have time (anywhere from 1/2 to maybe 2 or 3 hrs.....depending on when you last did maintenance on your computer) you can take a look at all your programs and decide if you want to uninstall any of them. Uninstall what you want, then do the disk clean up. After you do that, you should do a scan disk (the standard, not the thourough. Make sure you have the box checked that says to fix any errors found). And finally, a disk defragmentation. Try to shut down any programs running in the back ground that you don't need (such as email checkers, instant messagers, disable your anti virus for auto check.....basically, anything you don't need at the time). Disk defrag can take a long time if you have never or seldom do it.......so make sure your screen saver is disabled and any energy saving stuff like auto "sleep" mode. Once that is done, restart your anti virus and re-enable your screen saver and all the energy stuff and then do a complete shut down. Restart and you should be in pretty good shape. There are third party utilities you can buy that do a more complete job......Norton System Works has a good reputation but I've never used it.
DEW, I have Norton systemworks, which is great!!!!
BUT, for a few weeks now every time I try to close a pop-up ad my 'puter crashes. I have a "microsoft help" message in today, have contacted my ISP, restored settings, et al, but it still happens!
