Interesting..... I heard this mentioned on NASCAR Radio's SIRIUS Speedway yesterday afternoon. Remember Aegis Laboratories? They are the lab that performs the random drug testing for NASCAR. Apparently someone @ Aegis Laboratories stole a laptop that contained driver/crew personal information.

From Jayski.....

NASCAR has informed more than 1,000 drivers and crew members that a laptop computer containing social security numbers, driver's license numbers and other personal information was stolen last month from an employee of Aegis Laboratories, the company that oversees the sanctioning body's substance abuse testing program. Aegis administers planned and random drug tests to NASCAR license holders throughout the season, screening samples for banned substances and reporting back to the sanctioning body. The laptop computer was reported stolen on November 22nd, but many licensees were not informed of the theft until this week. NASCAR Director of Communications Kerry Tharp said the stolen laptop contained no medical or lab records, only driver's license and Social Security numbers. He said there have been no reports of any identity theft, adding, "in all likelihood, the person who stole the laptop sold it at a local Pawn Shop without ever knowing what was on it." Since the computer file in question was created in 2009, NASCAR and Aegis have instituted a new data-processing system that prevents such an incident from happening again. Aegis is revising its security procedures, encrypting data on laptop computers, and retraining affected employees on confidentiality and security procedures. Aegis has also agreed to supply all involved parties with two years of complimentary credit monitoring. NASCAR said it "apologizes to the affected individuals for this unfortunate incident involving one of our vendors, and we are pressing Aegis to do everything necessary to mitigate this situation."

Everytime I see something like this, I have to wonder: Why the hell do they have SSN's in the first place?!

Last semester, one of our professors had his (univ-owned) laptop stolen. It had records dating back to 2002, when our student ID number was -you guessed it- our SSN. So the Univ is paying for 2 years of monitoring for those students.

I've worked in the medical field for 30+ years writing software to do electronic billing for all sorts of specialties, etc..... From the year that I started programming through today, we've always collected SSN's as part of the patient data. For a long, long time the SSN's were required to be sent on a medical bill, electronic or paper. More recently that is not the case although the information is still collected. Why at this point, I don't know.

Recently went to a new doc. On the new patient paperwork they asked for my SSN. I left it blank. If they have my name, address and insurance info why do they need my SSN?

Way to much ID theft going on, happened to one of my wifes friends. Destroyed her. I guard my SSN and CC numbers, nobody gets them. We have a VISA debit card we use for internet purchases. We transfer money into that account as needed and that card can only access that account.

I'm too frikking old to start over.

I read something about some hackers involved with the Occupy movement were able to steal a bunch of info on police officers on duty at these rallies and sent it out. They even had the police officers salaries. Makes me want to get off the grid entirely.

I asked my GP Doc one time, the main reason? Don't pay and they turn it over to a collection co to track you down.

That info, salary, is readily available at your town hall on all public safety people and elected officials.

SST, Remember when our SSN was on our driver's license?
I used to think that was an invasion of privacy, but then again, so is Federal Drug Testing.

We do the same thing. Nobody gets our SSN's.

There needs to be new systems put in place for identities and such. When someone gets a hold of someone else's SSN, they have access to that persons' whole income. Yet it's a requirement on job applications, credit, banks, everything.
