I just got my computer back from the shop yesterday. It's nice that it's back and running better, and not shutting itself off anymore. They told me that the only way to drastically improve my performance at this point is to remove a bunch of my music and pictures that are taking up over half of my space. They said I have 15.1 somethings (gigs?) of music alone. They told me that if I get a 32 gig thing and move the stuff to there it will help tremendously. I'll get around to that soon. Too many other expenses popping up with the move to our new house right now.

Don't bother with over priced flash drives. Instead get yourself a 1TB external hard drive, when finances allow.

they hit it.

More RAM will help as well, if you do alot of multitasking.

I do. I usually have Rhapsody playing music and I'm usually playing solitaire or freecell while web surfing. I play solitaire while I am waiting for pages to load. I have little patience that way.

Freecell and Solitaire aren't exactly memory hogs.

Are you on dialup? If you can post the specs of your PC, we may be able to give you a few tips to lean it out.

No, I'm on AT&T (allegedly) high speed DSL.

As far as I know the specs are Pentium 4 2.0 processor, 512 MB, and I'm running Windows XP. Does that help?

I'm on lunch right now but will post a couple of things later on which you can do to help it along but that P4 and 512RAM are tall hurdles.

I know. I'm just gonna wait it out and replace it when I get my tax return next month. I was planning on replacing it anyway. I got rid of 1.6 gigs of music and it has sped it up a little more. I'm ok with how it works now for what will be a second computer when I get my new one.

Right on. If you need any advice on a new system, remember that many of us here @ racing-forums.com know everything about all things ;)

LOL, that's the truth. I had one of those -- ten years ago. :)
My last slot-1 CPU computer finally died 2 years ago or so. My oldest working unit now, other than my 3 Poweredge 2650 servers (Dual Xeon single-core/hyperthreading CPU's each), uses an Athlon XP CPU I believe, running windows 2K.

I still have some of the first computer package I ever bought stashed in the basement somewhere. It was a Pentium 75mhz, monitor, keyboard/mouse, Lexmark printer, speakers etc. and get this - it cost $2600.00. It was the first and last Lexmark printer I'll ever own ;)

I can buy a board for $19 that runs at 96MHz.

Or 700 MHz for $35 with onboard graphics (it's a small computer, add power source and a monitor and go)
