Concussion rule

I seem to remember Nascar implementing a rule stating that if you recieve a concussion during a race due to wreck or any other circumstances that you will be held out of the race the following week due to their safety and the competitors safety.

Im not sure if this is true or not but I do remember something along these lines being mentioned.

If this is the case, since Junior sufferred a concusion at Dover, will Nascar sit him out for Dega?

Interestingly enough, when the safety crews arrived at the crash scene they stated that Junior was knocked out. But Junior denied this and wanted to get out of the car on his own power, but the crews wouldnt let him, they took him out.

Was Junior aware of this rule and thinking about it at the time?

If I remember correctly, the new rule was that he had to be cleared by a NASCAR doctor before racing. I don't remember being required to sit out unless the exam didn't clear him to drive.

If this was a minor concussion like they said it was, he'll be back pretty quick. Its easy to pass medical exams with a minor concussion.

They showed some incar video and he was conscious when the crew got there but when they started to get him out, he went unconscious. So he was awake when they got there. I hope they let him race...that's if he is ok.

Well that sit out one race rule is a system that I believe CART uses after a driver injury. NASCAR has yet to approve Earnhardt's return, but for the sake of his points position and considering that Talladega is a track where he performs brilliantly I sure hope NASCAR lets him race.

I beleave if he does and wins, he might possibly get his 2nd place back...or in the top 3 atleast. What do you think?

Top 3 I think, in my opinion Dale Jr will have no trouble getting past Jimmie Johnson but I dont think Dale Jr will have enough to get past Harvick or race for the championship with Kenseth anymore, but then again who can?

I hope NASCAR will let Junior race, if he sits out a race, then his points position will sink rapidly in the standings considering how close it is from 5th on back.

Actually, I'd like to seem him set out. Then they could stick Hideo Fukuyama in the car and show everyone that he can be a master at Talladega.

In all seriousness if Dale Jr. cant race then I'd love to see someone from the Busch Series in the car.

I'd love to see Scott Riggs, Kerry Earnhardt or Scott Wimmer in it.

Oh, dear, N2, now I've got the hiccups from laughing so hard.
Haha, everytime I see N2's avatar I laugh.

Dude is just ugly.

Just wait. I have an even better avatar in the works. Can you say David Hasselholf in bikini underwear????

Nascar will let Jr Drive Dega so he can win his 5th stright Dega win...... He cheats @ this track, i know it becuase he has a better car then everyone else. His Aero Package was beat up during the Spring Race and he came back and win it.. thats messed up.

It's called team work, my friend. You cant cheat in racing, its not possible.

Dr. Petty (no relation) examined Jr yesterday. The process for go/no go is underway.

Concussions are in some ways cumulative. The more ya have, the more ya get. Even though Jr was out for only a very short period of time Sunday, he does have some history of problems with concussion.

Guessing that he will be cleared to drive on Sunday, but his proclivity for poor reaction to concussive force is something both he and NASCAR may have to address down the road.

They just said on the news that he is racing Sunday

Exactly! That was the same thing I was thinking...lol! Well said.

Let him think what he wants. If he thinks Jr. is cheating, wonder what he thinks about Newman with his 7 win sweep this year.

Earnhardt Jr. not yet cleared to race
DEI confident he'll be in the No. 8 at Talladega

As of Tuesday morning, Winston Cup driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. had yet to be cleared by NASCAR for competition this weekend following a follow-up doctor visit in the Charlotte area on Monday.
NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said Tuesday morning the sanctioning body had not cleared Earnhardt Jr. for competition and was waiting further information from the driver's doctor visit.

Earnhardt Jr. suffered a minor concussion and a bad sprain of his right foot in an accident during Sunday's MBNA America 400 at Dover, Del.

He is using crutches and has been told by doctors to stay off his feet, according to team officials. He had to cancel a planned appearance at a news conference Tuesday afternoon at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.

Dale Earnhardt Inc. officials still believe Earnhardt Jr. will be able to compete in Sunday's EA Sports 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, where the driver of the No. 8 Chevrolet has won the past four Cup races.

Further updates regarding NASCAR's decision whether to clear Earnhardt Jr. for competition and on his medical condition should come Tuesday afternoon, team officials said.

Following his 37th-place finish Sunday, Earnhardt Jr. dropped to fourth in the series points race, 490 behind leader Matt Kenseth. He has one win, 10 top-five and 16 top-10 finishes this season.

I hope they clear Dale Jr to race, if they dont, then his points race is over especially at a time in the season where the Budweiser team tends to do perfectly.

Just back from Dover. Was shocked to see what happen to Jr. cause the crash didn't look that bad. There was people cheering when he crashed and then when it took awhile to get him out the fans got pretty quite. Hope he'll be fine to race on Sunday.

I am no Earnhardt fan, so I might be biased. With that said, I hope they make this decision purely from a medical/safety standpoint, and don't take into account who he is or his dominating history at Dega.

Don't they have some reaction/reflex testing that all drivers had to do to get a baseline, then after a serious accident or injury, they have to retake the test to see how they compare? With these results playing a big part in whether they are cleared to race?

They will let him race Sun. I have been to Talladaga and it is a sea of red. And that is not for Eilliot or Mayfield. It will be quite a few angry people it Jr. don't run.

NBC will be happy though. They will have exclusive coverage (and will be the only network covering it) the riot that will breakout in Talladega if Junior doesnt race.

Hey NBC wants ratings right? ;)
