I'm having a new computer built --- I think I've pushed this 12 year old far enough.

Anyway, since my only service choices are dial-up and satellite, I've decided that satellite is the only way to go --- mainly because the world wide web has decided that everyone has broadband. I'm tired of not seeing video clips that have people laughing and news clips that have people talking.

My 2 choices here in East Texas are HughesNet(DirecTV) and something called Wild Blue.

Does anyone here have any experience with satellite --- good or bad. A 'net friend had severe trouble with email, but I'm not too concerned with that.

I've heard uploads are slow, is disrupted by weather sometimes, especially sunspot activity and it is considerably more expensive than cable. Just got cable internet a month ago and it is great. Good upload speed and downloads are really fast.

I use the cable which is available here..

If you have no cable I'd be looking into the WILD BLUE. It prolly is a local link to a cable company. If so you will be happier with it than the damn satellite connection. Call them and ask what the difference in service and price is to the satellite.
Betsy;)

Wild Blue has their own satellites --- it is truly satellite service. As to the monthly cost, only a difference of $10 a month.

Out here in the sticks, cable or DSL service is a mere dream.

I have satellite TV, so I'm well acquainted with disruption during storms. Doesn't bother me, since I wouldn't be on the 'puter during a storm anyway! We have a bad habit of losing power.

I just got DSL through my local phone company. I love it. I don't think I could go back to dial-up.

Never heard of them. But, as to dial up:
WildBlue includes a remote-access dial-up service to its WildBlue Pro Pak customers, allowing customers to access their email when they are not at home or out of the office. If you are a Value or Select Pak customer, dial up service costs $7.95 / month.

TRL, i'm on hughesnet, as are some of our neighbors.

The suckerhole they stick you in is price. It's 600 up front for the modem (which you then OWN) plus the monthly payments, or forgo the 600 and have it appended to your monthly payments (which are 100 in that case). Works for what we use it for, and it's a heckuva lot cheaper then your PSLs since you'll have that extra money now.
