So this year, the Championship comes down to not only Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards, but it also comes down to which is more important, Consistency vs. Wins.

Carl Edwards may only had one win all year, but looking at his stats, he has been VERY consistent in where he finishes on the track. Where at Tony Stewart may not have had the consistency of Edwards, he has racked up some wins which put him right on Edward's rear bumper.

So, which is more important when it comes to the Championship, wins or consistency?

I think it boils down to you have to have Consistency...

This is only an example...I did not figure the points out

If someone has 4 wins a 33rd a 27th a 10th a 15th a 7th and a 20th
and some one has 10 top 7s in the chase I think the 10 top 7 would win out and it should

My Opinion?
The fact that Fans are having to ask this question means that the Current Point System is doing it's job. Consistency and Winning Balance out at the End of It.

Good Job NASCAR :beerbang:

Both are important. I think it's "easier" to be consistent in the top ten than it is to go for the win each week. I honestly wish all the drivers tried to win every week, but obviously they don't. I understand them being cautious so they are around at the end of the race but I much prefer seeing a driver charging hard every lap and actually trying to win. The downside, of course, is the guy charging hard sometimes wrecks or blows up. My two cents...

I think there should be a balance. And, given the current points leaders, there is. We have a guy who's won multiple times, and a guy who's been consistent. Either one winning the championship, to me, would be a good thing because of this balance. It won't be a "black eye" as some seem to feel it would.

Well said.....

I still have to wonder though. Should Carl win this thing come Sunday without him having a won a race in the Chase, I'm afraid that Brain and company will be making changes once again.

Don't they make changes every year though? I mean some changes are bigger than others, but still.

For me, the question isn't which is more important, it's the balance between the 2 that's important.

Even with 4 wins, Tony's average finish is 2 spots behind Carl's, but they have scored the same number of points.

It seems like a good balance to me. I'm not sure I would like a guy being much more inconsistant than Tony has been taking the championship from a guy with a 2 position better average finish in the chase.

It's clear that this system, and even the old one, make wins more important, but it will only make up for so many bad finishes.

If it was all about wins, Stewart wouldn't have made the chase and few other guys would have so he wouldn't even be in contention.

Stewart himself said that he didn't belong in the chase!

Oh please can't they just leave it alone .

Very good point. Tony also said that Carls consistancy is impressive and if he wins, he deserves it.

I'd say that Edwards has been the most consistant driver all season but it's the system that allows drivers to lay back and play points.

Either way, I hope they go at it tooth and nail on Sunday and may the best car/driver combination on that day win.

That's exactly right. With how much of a penalty this system hits you with for a bad finish, Carl's strategy is what most drivers will employ.

The good thing about that is it opens the door to a driver going for broke and trying to take it away. I really like this battle of strategies, and either guy will deserve the win.

The goal in racing has aways been to go for the win if a driver is in a position to win - cause that's where a driver gets the most cash. But a 5th place finish pays more than a 25th place finish.

If they were to determine a series Champion based upon Dollars won, the more consistant driver would normally win it.

Points vs. Dollars: Same Difference

I guess you don't remember the break down of winnings I posted last week. I guess they could base it ONLY on purse money, but winning the 500 would be like winning 5 or 6 other races.

No, that's true. Only appropriate if every race payed the same amount (and no bonus money was figured in).

My point was that any method of determining a Champion will favor consistency over the course of a racing season.

In that case it would be:

Driver - Bucks or Points

1- Edwards - 8,189,570 He would be Locked in as our 2011 Champion Homestead pays less than 2 million to Win.
2- Stewart - 6,188,610
3-Jimmie Johnson - 6,178,150
4- Happy Harvick - 6,066,330
5- Kyle Busch - 6,046,060
6- Matt Kenseth - 6,009,850
7- Kurt Busch - 5,828,020
8- Jeff Gordon - 5,753,450
9- Denny Hamlin - 5,277,320
10- Ryan Newman - 5,192,400
11- Keselowski - 4,992,590
12- Lil Earnhardt - 4,082,540 ( don't feel to bad for little E he has other incomes )

Looks Like Winning WINS!!!
