WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Clifton "Coo Coo" Marlin, a former NASCAR driver and father of Nextel Cup Series veteran Sterling Marlin, died early Sunday morning in his hometown of Columbia, Tenn. after a long illness, Chip Ganassi Racing team officials confirmed. He was 73.
Sterling Marlin had returned to Tennessee late Thursday to be with his ailing father and missed Friday practice.
Coo Coo Marlin made 165 Cup starts in his career, from 1966 to 1980. He had no wins, but earned nine top-five and 51 top-10 finishes. His series best points finish was 20th in the 1975 season.
Road racing ace Scott Pruett, who also drives for Ganassi, will drive Marlin's No. 40 Dodge in Sunday's Sirius at the Glen. Pruett was supposed to drive his own entry this weekend, but qualifying was rained out Saturday.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete
