Bear downs 36 beers, passes out at campground
Rainier, not Busch, the beverage of choice for thirsty black bear

BAKER LAKE, Wash. - When state Fish and Wildlife agents recently found a black bear passed out on the lawn of Baker Lake Resort, there were some clues scattered nearby — dozens of empty cans of Rainier Beer.

The bear apparently got into campers’ coolers and used his claws and teeth to puncture the cans. And not just any cans.

“He drank the Rainier and wouldn’t drink the Busch beer,” said Lisa Broxson, bookkeeper at the campground and cabins resort east of Mount Baker.

Fish and Wildlife enforcement Sgt. Bill Heinck said the bear did try one can of Busch, but ignored the rest. The beast then consumed about 36 cans of Rainier.

A wildlife agent tried to chase the bear from the campground but the animal just climbed a tree to sleep it off for another four hours. Agents finally herded the bear away, but it returned the next morning.

Agents then used a large, humane trap to capture it for relocation, baiting the trap with the usual: doughnuts, honey and, in this case, two open cans of Rainier.

That did the trick.

“This is a new one on me,” Heinck said. “I’ve known them to get into cans, but nothing like this. And it definitely had a preference.”

How pitiful. Black bears are majestic creatures, normally harmless unless threatened. The encroachment of humans into their natural habitat is killing them off in record numbers. Bears love garbage. Garbage kills bears.

Poor bear. Hope no long term damage to its health resulted from his foray into boozing.

Prolly just woke up with a bad hangover. He will have a story to tell his grandcubs. If he can remember any of it.

Then please tell me why Black Bears are roaming heavily populated areas (like mine) and have to be tranquiised and moved to a remote area?

Simple.

With our vacation cabins and such, we have invaded their habitat and left garbage in cans and on the ground. Bears love garbage. They have started to roam into populated areas to get human food and garbage cans.

As recreational developments like chalet villages and condos and time shares continue to spread like a pox across these habitats, bears are forced to roam farther and farther in search of food. They find our leftover KFC buckets, McDonald's bags, and half-eaten Whoppers and the like.

The developments also rob the bears of precious acreage in which to forage. Their accustomed food sources are stolen from them so someone can sit in a hot tub and sip Chardonnay. Who's to wonder why they show up in populated areas?
