I know I'm guilty of doing this very thing but I really wasn't aware of the importance of posting the link rather than the entire article.

I sent an e-mail to Patty Kay and this was her response, also her permision for me to share it.

Dear Michael,
My editor forwarded your email to me, and I’d like to thank you personally for writing. In your email, you stated that you post the article on a board, which prompts this question. Do you post the link or the article itself? This is important, because if you are posting the article, then both IRN and I are being deprived of potential readership. I’ve tried to explain this several times to readers who love the column, but I fear that it falls on deaf ears.

In today’s world, a website survives for the most part on the advertising that it can attract, and that is solely dependant on the number of “hits” that a site is able to maintain. Every time a column is posted on a message board, both the site and I lose.

I realize that you weren’t clear as to which you are posting, but I felt it important to touch base with you, just in case.

Once again, thanks so much for writing,

~PattyKay

Michael,
Please, feel free to post my response. I only wish it were as easy to reach all of the others that do the same. I’ve known for some time that this is happening, but I’m powerless to do much about it unless someone is willing to change. What’s on the Net is free to everyone. All we ask is that vital click on the article.

Thanks for understanding,

~PattyKay

I do this in several different ways. The first depends on the length of the article. If it's way long, I will just post the first 'pertinent' part of the article and post a link to read the entire article. I will not say that I post a link to the article EVERY time, but I certainly make every effort to do so. It was nice to see that you got a response from Patty Kay.

There are codes you can bury at the start of the article that won't let you copy. A lot of commercial sites (newspapers etc.) will not let you copy them.

I used to post the entire article, now I just post the first couple paragraphs and then the link.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention though.

Even if you are just posting your thoughts on an article it is nice to provide the readers with the link so they can read and come to their own conclusions. And, that satisfies most authors and publications.

Links are good, since then once you read the article you can look around their site.. that and it saves bandwith on the boards, even if its only text my comp will freak out

I just barely know how to send emails. Don't know how to cut and paste.

I am quilty of it and I bet just about everyone has done it at lest wonce.

Sheeeooooot!!!!! I'm just as guilty as the best of us.
After reading that and thinking on it, it sure makes
sense to me. I too, will post the general subject matter and provide t he link from now on.
