Stewart Calls New Car "Basket of Junk"
Two-time Cup champion Tony Stewart is one of several drivers who have been openly critical of the new cars. On his radio show Tuesday on the SIRIUS Satellite Network, Stewart said he finally drove one of the COTs at Lakeland, Fla., and was far from impressed. -- "Oh, what a basket of junk," Stewart said. "It drives like a station wagon, an old station wagon, like an old Oldsmobile station wagon, green with wood panel trim on the sides," he added. "Granted, I know we were on harder tires than what they would run there but, boy, it didn't feel good. You know, it's like anything else, though. I'm sure the more we'll run it, the better we'll get the setups and all that." NASCAR currently is certifying the chassis for the new cars and many Cup teams haven't even started to put the bodies on most of their COTs. That means there are still plenty of unknowns remaining. ...Daily Headlines

I'll wait till sonoma before making any major judgements.

I don't think bristol has enough speed to really show where the CoT is better...but the 2 road courses and 'dega is where we'll see the true benefits. (as well as how well a red #19 CoT undercarriage looks)

Shoot, it doesn't matter to me what the car looks like. The sport has gone through many changes over the years and as far as I'm concerned, all of the models look the same to me now, so a nice change might be good for the sport as well. I can imagine how some of you might have felt back in the day when the King drove that Plymouth with the big wing on it. :D

Gee Kat, you could work for the tabloids with headlines like that;)

Tony dont always think before he speaks although he is getting better and to be fair he did follow it up with,,,,its like anything, w
ith set up and tuning blah blah............

Its going to be an interesting year

I'm with buck on this one. It doesn't really matter about the looks of the car -- the only thing that matters is the guy behind the wheel and what he can do on the track with the equipment.

And as Clutch said, "It's going to be an interesting year." :D

I don't have a problem with the looks of the car at all, like Buck said a little change might be good at this point. I don't think this year will tell the story at all for the COT, although Talladega will be interesting for sure. It will be 2008 when the teams will have a huge up hill battle to struggle with the setups for every track with the COT. Those that adapt will do well in 2008, but the teams that don't find the right setups will have major problems. All i can say is if it improves the plate racing even 10%, I'm all for it.

Gee Clutch, don't shoot the messenger!

The COT is fugly, but that's not what matters. It's all about improving SAFETY for the drivers. Tony said what he thought, and that's his right.

Tony needs to quit his bitchin and whining. The COT is here good looking or not so deal with it.

I kind of like it. But i do wish they used more of a stock body like pre 95.

pre 95?..........its the Car of Tomorrow :D that would be a bit of an oxymoron

Sorry Lap3 couldnt resist, but I know what you mean, make them look a little more like "Stock" Cars. Its been so long since they looked stock I'm more than happy to only have a badge to differentiate.

NASCAR says that the COT will actually be more manufacturer defined than in the past. Okay, then why will all the templates be the same? Hmmmm, maybe all the manufacturers are making the same body style now so they will all look the same on the street.

Here's another view on the COT. Maybe, just maybe this will stir up the competition a little. In stead of the same teams winning all the time, might we see a new team/driver break out of the pack of also rans? While I don't think that will actually happen, it would be nice to see some of those guys who've been languishing back in the pack something to shoot at. Brings to mind a few years ago when Sterling Marlin was actually a top five competitor and had it not been for an injury, might possibly have ended up with a championship.

As had been said before, it's going to be interesting for sure.

well the picture for the mass they had of jeff's COT in full paint, i think it looks pretty darn good once it's not in primer gray. no pictures of the immediate nose, but they say once they get the rods painted and everything, it should be as indistinguishable as the ones on the trucks.

For the record, the cup splitters will be 4-6" regulations. Truck series is 4"ish. I looked at an up close picture of a truck nose, it's very hard to see the uprights. So really the only noticable difference will the the extra nose overhang.

Marty just had a bigger carb.:)

:) Right you are Tabasco !!!!!! :)

Guess I shoulda said Marty had more horsepower due to illegal craburetor instead of a bigger engine !!! But shoulda, coulda, woulda, no matter how ya slice it, Da Whizzer didn't say it correctly. Thank you for pointing it out.:)

Brings up some memories...

Made me remember Marty dating my lil sister.. summer of 53 as I sit here recalling. Was when we lived in Gatlinburg. Time do fly don't it?
Betsy:eek:
