COT and the Wing

So, there's an article at nascar.com about how the car of tomorrow will have a wing on the back...has anyone seen this...the picture looks kind of different and strangely unsettling. The cars look a little too "sports car" for me. I guess it will take some getting used to. Anyone else have any opinions?

Ehh, it doesn't matter. Some would watch if they were out there on tricycles.
I still wish they'd throw out the rule book. Let'm race any make, any model. If they put a behemoth motor under the hood the driver still has to control the ride and the motor still has to last the entire race. Along with everything else.
Soon we'll have the drivers show up, draw a number out of a hat and that is the car they drive that day. All the teams will do is stick on the decals...

barelypure, I'm with you. If I can buy the car off the lot, then that's exactly the body that has to be raced. Of course, safety equipment must be present, but the body must conform to the showroom car.

Showroom racing once had a division in SCCA i believe. Nascar got away from the different body styles because there was too much bitching about this make and that make having an unfair advantage. If you want to look at it from that perspective then you can say the owners and drivers brought the COT upon themselves.

Duh, then drive a freaking different car. If a Matador is cleaning up then drive a Matador or have the car company you drive for come up with an answer. Showroom is showroom. And really didn't most of these cars have a bigger green room than what we have now. Yeah, ok put in roll bars and nets and HANS etc. Leave the safer barriers up. But, the racing was more exciting.

I am not looking forward to the cot! If they are going to call it stock car racing then I agree it should be showroom shapes (and whatever the crew can get away with). I expect NASCAR to change it's name to NAOCOT!

You know, it used to be at the local tracks, the late model cars were just that, cars from the latest models of the manufacturers. When the design of the Camero began to win all the time, the late models began to take shape in that mold and today, a late model dirt car resembles no car on Earth. And, they all look alike but have different drive trains and that's what they are called.

NASCAR is no different in this respect and will follow the same line. Ten, fifteen years from now, people will be talking about how the Ford, or Chevy or Dodge or Nissan or Toyota or Honda is lord of the track. But most people won't be able to tell what make is what without the decals. Brand loyalty is great but those guys fielding cars will tell you that they want to win and if it's a certain manufacturer they use, they want it to be able to do the job. Remember, they are first and foremost, racers. Some have become car salesmen, but even there, some of those guys sell different cars than what they drive/own/work for. What drives these guys is the money. If they can't get it from one manufacturer, they'll go to another.

Exactly, money is what drives this sport, sponsorship support is everything. I happen to like the car of tomorrow, the way i look at it ....it is progress whether you like it or not. It will be a safer car and that is what the entire development of this car was intended to produce.

yup. and as somebody in nascar said:

"I never see a blade on street cars. But at least i do see the occasional eurowing like the COT will likely have"

This discussion has been hashed over just on this forum 100 times. Stock cars means stock cars, except in the case of NASCAR, because, well they're NASCAR and they do whatever the hell they want....for the highest bidder :)

Kyle, then why don't you go to your local track and watch the bombers race weekly. There you will see true stockers. As for me, the age of true stock cars has been over for most of my life and I'm closing in on 60. And it isn't just NASCAR here either. ARCA has the same cars, then look at ASA. Hooter's Pro Cup? It seems that the only real stockers are those old bombers.

Kyle, the Buckster is right! There is nothing "stock" about today's NASCAR cars, and rightly so.
The older drivers have seen a gazzillion changes in their racing careers but have adapted. You may have noticed that very few are complaining. JMO

At least some of the other folks caught the joke.

Vision allows most to know that 'stock cars' in NASCAR aren't stock.

Lighten up.

Over the years I have watched the teams make the first changes to their cars from "stock". These changes made their cars go faster. As the cars became faster and faster the governing body(NASCAR here) has made changes from stock to make the cars slower. NASCAR has made so many changes to the rules that the cars now will only go as fast as NASCAR thinks is proper.
Finally, NASCAR is designing their on body style.. I doubt it will change the race much from where it is now. But "stock"? The only features I can see that might be stock are the headlight stickers.

Betsy, my wife and I attend the local races each and every Saturday night when the season is on and we love the action. The featured cars are modified cars which are still called "stockcars", but the only thing that has to conform to the stock configuration is the roof of the car. The rest of the car looks like a fenderless hot rod. To get an idea of what I'm talking about, look at Mopardh9's avitar. We're talking hot here, but stock?
