Could someone explain

Why is it that some drivers earn more for races when they finished back behind other drivers? All I can figure is it has something to do with their contracts, but that shouldn't really matter in what the "race" pays out. I would think if their contract promises them X amount of dollars for running a race, that would be separate. Anyway, can someone explain it to me? Thanks! :)

If I remember right, a lot of it is "contigency" money, and has to do with whatever decals they have on their car. I think if you look at the 2 and the 12, since they seem to run less stickers than everyone else, their payout should be lower.

Nascar has various programs, the Winners Circle being just one, there are other programs too. You need a Philly lawyer to interpert them.
Plus contingency money, all those stickers on the car are worth $$$. Not every car carries all the stickers availible for contingency money due to sponsor or personal conflicts. Petty didn't run the Busch sticker on Adam's car, Grandma Petty is agin' drinkin'.
The amount of contingency money paid varies, one team may get 2 grand, another 5 or even 10 depending on their contract, race finish and points standings.

There are roughly 30 contingency sponsors, from Raybestos Brakes to EA Sports to Coors Light and just about every other type of business you can think of. Teams that run the stickers on their cars are eligible for the rewards those companies offer after each race.
Just two seasons ago, Kasey Kahne earned more than $200,000 in year-end awards from contingency sponsors. He won that much by winning six poles and leading after the first lap.
"They present money for being the pole winner, leading the most laps, leading at the halfway point, and, of course, winning the race."
NASCAR gives each team a list before the season detailing their desired layout. Goodyear, for example, goes directly over the front tires.
For example the driver that leads the most laps wins the Gatorade Front Runner award and a $10,000 bonus regardless of where he finishes. Sometimes there are awards for drivers that lead specific laps, "hard charger" awards for gaining the most positions, headache awards for having bad luck, etc. These will all affect the final prize money.

Wow! I had no idea it had to do with stickers (sponsors.) Thanks everyone!!! :)
