With the NFL pondering whether to add more play dates for the regular season, NASCAR is looking at the question of whether or not the opening race, Daytona 500, could/should be moved. Lots of variables to think about there, but it won't happen for another couple of years if it does happen. In the past, there has been talk, not much but a little, of adding a date or two to NASCAR's schedule, so how would this affect those talks?

i don't see daytona being the first race being moved or changed. traditionally it's the first race of the season along with speedweek. where else would you open - california, vegas? you'd be alienating your strongest fan base, the deep south. personally i think the market is oversaturated as it is. cut back a couple of dates and leave the fans wanting more instead of adding dates and cheapening the product.

1982 was when the 500 started to be the 1st race of the season. But its really not a big deal for me when the race is or how they do the schedule.

Exactly....... Before then, it was Riverside. and it was barely noticed....... NASCAR wanted to start the season with a spectacle, and the 500 has become that. I can't see NASCAR even considerin doin that, but then again........ ole Brian has done LOTS of things that leave me shakin my head.......

The thing NASCAR is looking at is whether or not to delay the start of the season. The Daytona 500 is the start of the season and will continue to be. However, if the NFL adds two more games to the season and doesn't begin any sooner than they do now, that would put the Super Bowl on the same day as the Daytona 500. And here's something else to ponder with this question, Sprint has a hand in both NASCAR and the NFL.

aaaaaah...... I see now. Sometimes I get confused....lol

Hmmm, that does put NASCAR in a bad spot. Only a handful of open dates now, and if a rain out or two happens, then its REALLY tight.

So what would happen if it was moved 2 weeks back? Would we lose 2 races then?

Ah hah. Now you see the problem. But quite honestly, with TV involved, especially Fox and how they are involved in both sports, I would think that they too would get involved. My thoughts are that if the NFL does expand their dates, even two, they will do so by starting the season earlier. All of this talk has come about because of the four pre-season games that most fans see as meaningless, but yet they charge full price for the games. The NFL could cut back to three pre-season games and things wouldn't change if they went to a 17 game season.

it was my understanding that more official nfl games would be offset by decreasing an equal amount of pre-season games. thus no change in number of games played. i also read that more teams could be included in the playoffs with an extended schedule.

I am sure that NASCAR is hoping that is right.

From my understanding, the plan Roger Goodell presented was to expand the NFL regular season to 18 games (2 more than the current 16) and they would start the regular season in August, 2 weeks earlier.

Actually, Goddell doesn't want the season to start any earlier. If that is the case, the Super Bowl would be played the week the Daytona 500 usually occurs. That would force NASCAR to move the 500 up one week or back one week.

That's a slick idea on the NFLs part. They're trying to bring down every other sport -- but I think they're at their peak and expanding the season would hurt the NFL.

Again I'm not 100% sure but the thing I heard was starting the regular season earlier by eliminating a few weeks of boring preseason. But eliminating preseason exhibition games makes sense.

NFL trying to bring down every other sport doesn't. Their marketing strategies are tyrannical and it will backfire.
