Could this really happen?

All loyalties and predjudices aside, do you think it is possible for Jimmie Johnson to win the championship and lose the Rookie of the Year?

By the way the ROTY points is configured differently from the Cup, I think it is entirely possible and that is a shame.

And it goes both ways here, Newman could win the Cup and lose ROTY.

Do you think that is right? I don't.

ROTY should follow the same rules as the Championship in Cup.

Give us your views on this possible scenario.

This has to be one of the biggest oddities in sports - makes no sense....

I guess but I just don't know. Really don't see the kid taking the Cup. The driving is going to start getting a whole lot rougher and it would not surprise me to see Jimmie start finding the wall.

Starting today.

I think that Johnson will win the Championship and Newman the ROTY. That would be funny.

Well whoever wins the champion also has a say as to who will win the ROTY. It goes bye 3 things, the rookie points, the champion, and NASCAR. NASCAR and the champion will vote to who they think should be the champion and the points help decide as well.

If JJ wins championship, he should certainly win ROTY. It would be quite a fiasco if he was WC Champ and not ROTY. I'm definitely not a JJ fan but, he does seem to have a more mature demeanor than many of the drivers out there. Newman also has quite a mature attitude and driving style. They are the future of Nascar and are pure talent. Not someone that gets a ride because of name.

If that should happen it sure would go down in the history books!:): "Jimmy Johnson, the only rookie to win the Winston Cup Championship but loose the Rookie of the Year Title".:) Bet JJ would give up the ROTY title in a heartbeat for the WC championship!!!:D

that would be pretty darn interesting~ but i doubt it seriously~ i just hope he doesnt have a spohomore slump like some do

Mathematically, it is possible. But I think he won't win either one.

People have been saying this all year. 12 races left he will start falling behind, 11 races left the vets will show him now. when is it going to stop when theres one race left and hes still in the top 3 in points. He has stayed up there just as long as the vets that are in the top 5.

Smack, take a deep breath. Remember, we have heard all this before from those in denial. ;)

In response to the ROTY, I thought it was the past WC Champion that was on the panel?
But anyway, I think JJ and Newman are both very talented drivers that will add a lot to NASCAR. Newman has an aggressive style in the form of win or lose I'm going for it. JJ is also aggressive in his hunger for wins but he also has the smoothness that another familiar driver has. I like them both, enjoy watching both of them race, but in what I have seen so far this year my vote would go to JJ.
As far as JJ winning the Cup title this year, I think since day one when he signed on the dotted line this was the goal, the resources, funding and coaching all pointed in that direction.

It is the past WC champion that helps determine the ROTY, this year it has been altered though. Since Jeff Gordon was the champion last year and JJ drives for him, NASCAR has decided that this year the past champion will not be part of the decision due to conflict of interest.

People dismissing Jimmie's chances when he is 30 points out?

Fascinating.

I would not be surprised at all if he takes over the point lead after Kansas.

I wouldn't dismiss any of the top 5 drivers for the WC champ this year and that includes JJ. Now if he wins and Ryan won ROTY wouldn't surprise me either. When I was looking at the breakdown between the two, JJ has won more races but Ryan has been more consistent in top finishes. Of course, we all know that with just a few races left that could all change. So what's the problem if JJ wins either or both--they are both good drivers, talented and well put together as maturity for such young ages. I think that's why I like them both. It's fun to watch for sure.
As for Nascar, if JJ won ROTY and the WC title, wouldn't that be one for the record books and look good for Nascar?

Dug up this old post. Seems it "could" play out this way.

I can understand why the rules are like they are, but this day and age they need changed. Make it whoever finishes higher in the championship. Until then we will have to live with the current system, and since this year is the current system Newman should win.

Jimmie Johnson still has a chance, but the only way he could take this is if Tony Stewart has some sort of mechanical problem or gets involved in some sort of racing incident. Jimmie shoud be more concerned about keeping his position, though, because he could easily slip back a couple positions in the points if he can't keep his car up front. Starting in the 30's today isn't what Jimmie needs to content for the championship or hold his position. Hopefully he will do well today.
