Coy Gibbs is going to make a announcement @ Homestead-Maimi Speedway about his 2004 plans. He might make a retirement of his racing career. Coy Gibbs doesnt have much experience behined the wall of a stock car becuase his practice are usually canceld becuase of rain or something else.

JJ Yeley just signed a multi-year deal with JGR will go to a ABC event.

Nope. I know Coy's PR so i get first hand information before anything comes out.

I'm one of those people that wants to see it before I believe it. So until I see proof, then this is dismissed as pure speculation.

Gibbs to retire? Barring a catastrophe in the final five races, #18-Coy Gibbs will be the series' top rookie, but the honor will be hollow. Gibbs will win the title by default, thanks to the enormous resources behind him. What's more, the title could be the final chapter in his driving career. Gibbs was the only racer to enter his freshman year with solid backing and the support of one of NASCAR's pre-eminent organizations: Joe Gibbs Racing. Yes, Joe Gibbs -- the three-time Super Bowl champion coach and two-time Winston Cup champion owner -- is Coy's father, but the rookie had to earn his ride. Now, it's a question of whether he wants to continue beating himself up emotionally and physically. "I've spent the whole year here and haven't figured out much," says Gibbs, who's 15th in points and has two top 10 finishes. "It's not really clicking when it comes to figuring out Busch cars, and I'm probably not going to, which is really frustrating." Joe Gibbs says his son's performance has suffered because the series reduced the number of tests it allowed, and rain has cut further into practice time. The Gibbs organization met last week, and an announcement about Coy's future was expected early this week. Retirement, Coy says, is one option. His dad is emphatic about one thing: Coy will be the one to make that choice.(FoxSports)(10-14-2003

Personally I think his possible retirement isn't a surprise, he has never ran particularly competitively in Busch or Truck racing last year.

You'd think with the Gibbs equipment he could compete once in a while like Mike Bliss or Mike McLaughlin, who I believe won a race last year. Coy Gibbs just isn't a stock car racer.

I'd rather see Coach Gibbs put someone in the car who deserves the ride, not just his son who will just be another Larry Foyt out there.

yo Dude. Coy is a personal friend to me. He has done good in both Trucks and Busch and ASA and Late Models. If he doesnt want to race he doesnt have to. I think he wants to stick to running his bgn operation and help JD Gibbs out with Presidental Job for JGR.... He is a lot better driver then Larry Foyt is.... Period

How do you know that? Larry isn't driving for a very well team and it seems to me, that Coy is and he isn't doing anything with it.

Hey,

I'm sorry that I offended you, and I meant by saying Gibbs was like Larry Foyt only in part that Foyt was given a WC ride by his father before he was ready or proved himself for it.

I understand he's a personal friend of yours but you gotta look at the stats:

28 starts this year and only 2 top ten finishes in the Busch series. With that equipment he should have a few more than that. I mean Tina Gordon and Chase Montgomery have 1 top ten in Busch this year. Bliss has 12 and nearly won a race. Maybe if Gibbs stays around in the Busch series he'll gain more experience and run better if he decides to keep racing.

Look at Ricky Hendrick the last few seasons. He was mediocre at best and when he decided to retire Vickers came in the car this year and has a shot at the title. It's the same car, different driver. Hendrick is now managing the car and is obviously successful. Maybe Ricky Hendrick just isn't meant to be a stock car driver. He was brought up around racing by his dad and of course wanted to get in himself, so he gets in his dad's Busch car and doesn't have much success. It happens, Kyle Petty hasn't exactly followed Richard Petty's winning ways either. It's great that Coy has the determination to succeed at this level of racing, but it's not like he has to be a race car driver.

Obviously it's Coy's choice to do what he wants, and I wish him success in whatever venture that may be including continuing to drive the busch car or do something in the Gibbs organization.

Oh my, it's back to "deserving" a ride and again it boils down to really really good or really really pretty. Coy Gibbs like Kerry E is niether.

Less than 20 drivers out of 10's of thousands that race almost every Saturday night find themselves in cars and racing for teams that actually have a shot at winning in Cup.

Young Gibbs was able to hang with the wanna-bees, has-beens, and never-weres in Trucks but once he moved to Busch the masquerade was over. 2 top tens in 34 races don't cut it. Half the dern teams in Busch are little more than privateers hoping to just make a payday and keep the shop doors open.

Coy Gibbs, like Ricky Hendrick last year, discovered a truth about himself. The truths they found are completely different in nature, but from what I read between the line with both are basics that race drivers everywhere must learn.

One of things that is happening, and will continue to happen, with drivers geting opportunities to run with the "big boys" without much prior racing experience is that the natural selection process does not have time to work them out.

Gonna be putting words in that were not said, but that I read between the lines.

If Coy is quitting after a bad season in the Busch series he is doing what he should do. The deal is that a racer cannot allow a frustrating season to end his dream. If it does, frankly the driver never had the dream. Playing this game at this level is not easy, it's not supposed to be. Without the confidence and desire to perservere, no amount of skill or equipment will make a driver succeed.

Ricky found another truth. This game hurts, it can hurt bad. Not emotionally, but physically. There are only two kinds of drivers in this regard in the big time, those who have been injured and those who are about to be. A driver who cannot accept this and put it way back in the nowhere of his mind, cannot run.

In the past these simple truths were discovered by competitors long before they ever reached the level of Busch and certainly of Winston Cup. Even those who now move into these series at young ages have years and years of racing behind them. For the most part they have learned what they need to know about themselves. Those who move up without the time, will have learn and learn fast. At this level it does not take long.
