Craftsman leaving series? UPDATE - Confirmed: Hearing that Sears Craftsman will be leaving as sponsor of the Truck Series following the 2008 season. The announcement is expected to be made within the next few days, possibly as early as tomorrow.(12-3-2007)
UPDATE: Craftsman will be out as title sponsor of NASCAR's truck-racing series beginning with the 2009 season, The Star has learned. No new title sponsor has been found to replace Craftsman, but a search will soon be getting under way, said Steve Phelps, marketing director for NASCAR. He said he believes NASCAR will have little problem finding a new title sponsor because of the increasing popularity of the series. "We haven't started a search, per se," Phelps said. "But what we want to try to do is identify companies that we believe would be a great fit for the series and a great fit for the fan base. So we'll get out there in 2008, the new year, and start discussions with new companies. No real timelines on when it's going to get done. But it will obviously get done." Craftsman's contract with NASCAR ends after the 2008 series. Craftsman has been the title sponsor since 1995, the year NASCAR founded the series. Over the past 13 series, the trucks have featured some of NASCAR's best racing. Television ratings in terms of total viewership have grown every season. Scott Howard, manager of marketing partnerships and activation for Sears, said his company had been in discussions with NASCAR about continuing sponsorship of the series for the past several months. But, he said, "We have come to the decision that we're going to be giving up our title sponsorship to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series at the end of 2008. We are fully committed to the series until the end of next season." Howard said that Craftsman does not plan to withdraw fully from NASCAR. He said his company will continue exploring efforts to maintain a presence in the series.(Kansas City Star)(12-4-2007)

Busch is leaving the "under series" but remains in the "top tier series" as a major player.
Sears (Craftsman) is facing corporate financial problems, citing other reasons for dropping the series.

But why does anyone consider Nationwide worthless to racing??
Nationwide is paying over seventy million dollars to be primary sponsor of the series and, as a national insurance company are a viable, legitimate sponsor. And Allstate is also involved (as are Geico and others) so why is an insurance company worthless as a racing sponsor ???

Not sure what criteria a sponsor needs to establish to be considered
as being worthy to racing as a sponsor, but if they have the money, ae legitimate, exercise moral conduct in professional dealings and are making the commitment, why not ???
Beats having Budweiser, Crown Royal or Winston as a major sponsor.
Insurance is better than booze or smoking.
After all, isn't NASCAR touted as being a family sport ????? ;)

I have to agree with Whizzer on this. Nothing wrong with Nationwide being a sponsor.

What I don't buy is the BS from Nascar........... finding a sponsor that fits with the series and the fan base?

Come on!!!

The only fit that Nascar worries about is how much money they can fit in their pockets.

Sears (Craftsman) is facing corporate financial problems, citing other reasons for dropping the series.

It was reported in last week's USA Today that Sears has reported a 99% drop in profits for the 3rd quarter of this year. They are hurting. Plus, they bought the dead weight known as Kmart. I don't blame them for getting out.

Companies generally sponsor a racing series to improve their bottom line. When that doesn't happen they usually drop the sponsorship. They aren't in it to be a nice guy.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Kmart is buying Sears, Roebuck & Co. for $11 billion in a deal that will marry two of the nation's oldest retailers that had trouble keeping up with the changes in American culture around them.

I think you have it backwards...

What bout Kobalt tools @ Lowes....just a thought

Already got the Kobalt Tools 500

Then that explains Sears' problems.

Yeah, without Kmart's infusion of cash Sears would have had to close their doors. Can they come back, I don't know. But, it will take time. So that they posted losses is not altogether unexpected.

Not busting chops here but the question is still hanging out there.:)

Why is Nationwide a worthless sponsor to the series ???

And who reportedly told Geico to get out and why ??

DAMN !!!!!! So many questions. So little time.;)

Howbout the Geico Truck Series?

There's a way to pi$$ nationwide off.

It slays me that people can slam a company simply because they don't care for the company. I'm an employee of the US Post Office and I can tell you that I know the many, many faults of my "company", but when I hear someone criticize the business that signs my paycheck, I don't just go on the defense, but I examine what that person says and then I react. Sometimes it's positive and sometimes it's not, but I want to see what the person has a fault with. I, as well as just about everyone here, knows what Andy's problem with ESPN is, so we/they can debate his problem with him. But when someone says that this company or that company is just worthless without citing any problems/claims, they don't give anyone an opening to debate them. If I were a Nationwide employee, I might think that MRM is a State Farm agent.

Let's not forget that NASCAR is a business.

Old friend I have to be honest with you here. Trust me, we ALL know you work for the Post Office. That's why we walk on egg shells when you are around. We never know 'who's next'...

You better watch it bp, cuz you are going to get a LOT of junk mail. I'll even forward mine to you!

:lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

BTW - BP, do you know Cliff Claven? :D :lol2: Heh heh... j/k .. my cousin works for them, too. I have to say they do a lot better job getting "it done" than a lot of other companies. When we had 2 major ice storms, our carriers were out there climbing through the downed limbs and sliding through the ice. I was impressed.

Nationwide told Gieco to get out they had article on NASCAR.com awhile back saying that nationwide would not grandfather in gieco like nextel did with cingular. I cant find the article go figure.

I didnt mean to say worthless company what i meant by that is im one of the people that wants to see some sponsor actually related to racing like craftsman tools and Lucas Oil and those. Companies that people that work in the pits every saturday night can identify with. But i know that they are trying to appeal to the population not the people who eat, sleep live racing.

I retract my statement about nationwide being a worthless company.
