AND - Craven to Retire? Ricky Craven announced last night he will be separating from his team at the end of the 2004 NASCAR season and possibly retiring. After a disastrous start to the season, Craven, of Newburgh, Maine, said car owner Cal Wells decided to terminate his contract at the end of the 2004 season. With two years left on his contract, financial terms were settled. "We've had a lot of heated discussions and it's mutual and I agreed to finish this year,'' Craven said. ``This is a performance business. I'm going to work as hard as I can for the rest of the 2004 season.'' Craven then speculated that after the season he may retire from NASCAR.[but doesn't expand of offer anymore](Portland Boston Herald)
HOWEVER an excerpt from the Press Herald: "I still have a passion to compete," said Craven, the popular driver from the tiny Maine town of Newburgh. "I still hate to lose. I still have the hope and desire to succeed in this business and to compete at this level. I'm interested in exploring the options that might be available to me next year."(in part from the Portland Press Herald)(7-23-2004)

Craven could be getting a look-see from Bill Davis for a possible second-team shot.

Craven is still a better than average talented driver and has a very fervent fan base. He is certainly not over the hill in age and I don't know anybody in the sport who doesn't like the guy.

I see him getting a shot with some cup team next year. JMO.

I hope so 4x, I think Ricky is far more capable driver than present equipment allows.

IMO Cal needs to hire someone like Fatback that came from a bigger team and knows how their cars are being built and also lease engines from Hendricks or Gibbs. Way to many motor problems plauge this team, but I don't think the bodies on these cars are competitive either. Same problem all the small teams are having.

Seems to me that these 1 car teams should for a co op like RAD (Richard, Andy & Dale) for RP. If they all shared information, each team testing in different areas, sharing wind tunnel info it seems it would make them all better. Just a thought.
