Cal Wells said Sunday that within the week he will announce that Bobby Hamilton Jr., 26, will be in the 32 car for next year, with Harold Holley as crew chief.
Wells also said, again, that he would like to expand to a second team. With only 35 full-time Cup teams, and with 43 spots on the grid available each weekend, it would seem likely that Wells could put something together.
"We've got things we want to accomplish, and we're just trying to mix it up so we can produce," Wells says. "Ricky has done an incredible job. I want to make sure he can be surrounded by the things he needs. So, for our friendship's sake, we need to look at what we can do for each other that's the best for both.
"This is a tough deal. We're spinning out, but we're not in the fence.
"We've both got objectives, but Rick's time frame, frankly, is shorter than mine. He needs to get into a situation where he can capitalize on the best the garage has to offer before the garage turns its back on him. I have more time; I'm 48, and I can be doing this when I'm 68."
Taking the driver out of the equation, Wells rates his team at a "seven" on a 10-scale, "so that has to be improved as well.
This Kat doesn't much care for Bobby Jr.
