Crew chief suspended after new violation
By DAVID POOLE
The Charlotte Observer

Jimmy Elledge, crew chief on the No. 55 Chevrolets in Winston Cup, has been suspended by NASCAR for this weekend's race at Kansas Speedway.

Car owner Andy Petree plans to fill in during the Protection One 400 on the 1.5-mile tri-oval.

Elledge was also fined $5,000 for "unapproved air directional devices" found on the car during inspection before qualifying last weekend at Dover. Greg Biffle is currently driving that car in place of the injured Bobby Hamilton, who said this week he isn't likely to return until Martinsville on Oct. 20.

Elledge was fined and placed on probation after unapproved fuel cell spacers were found on the team's car following the Aug. 27 race at Michigan. His probation will continue through the end of the season.

Educate a fairly new fan please.

If the car was found to be illegal prior to qualifying then why was the 55 allowed to qualify?

I can not in any way prove this but my best educated guess would be that the car was allowed to qualify AFTER the illegal part or parts were removed and the car passed inspection. That does not exonerate the crew chief however, he cheated and was caught and now pays the penalty.

Basic answer is that nascar does not believe in punishing a cars sponsor.

GFab the only other name I have used in forums is DJ42002
cept last year it was DJ42001 and the year before that it was DJ42000....you get the idea :)

I decided it was too hard to keep changing my user name every year so since this has become the only forum I choose to participate in I made it easier!

While I am glad it's all well and good they find these things before the race, what about after the race? You never hear about the 2nd place car not meeting height requirements, it's only ever the winner. It's nice to see NASCAR making an effort to check the cars and issue penalties, but they need to apply this not only to the start of the race but after as well.

Jimmy Elledge just got Kevin Harvick's seat in the big red trailer. Jimmy, Jimmy, you've got to be careful, Big Mike is watching;)

It is applied after the race, This year there have been two drivers penalized after races for height requirement infractions discovered after the race. DJ was one of them and he finished third and Jimmie Johnson was the other and I think he finished in the top 5. DJ's resulted in a points and money penalty but Johnson's was before they started taking away points and was just a money penalty.
