Randy Weaver Takes Late Model Win in Wild Finish At Crossville Speedway Grand Re-Opening…3-Wide Battle Royal for Win on Final Lap Sends Fans into Frenzy
(Crossville, TN – August 7, 2002) Race fans flocked into Crossville Speedway this past Friday night with a lot of questions on their minds, and by the end of the evening the primary answer which they were seeking was provided in resounding fashion as spectators witnessed three and four-wide racing action in what traveling fans noted to be one of the most exciting races of the 2002 dirt late model season. With four divisions taking the green flag for the debut night of racing at the 1/3 mile high-banked oval which had been closed for two and a half years, the Late Model feature literally shocked the great crowd of spectators with its frenzied racing action. Hometown native Randy Weaver of Crossville would claim the checkers in the 30-lap main event, but he would do so with a wild three-wide, high side pass on the final lap to take the victory.
Weaver’s charge to the win on the last lap saw the driver of the Gunter Drywall/Tony’s Auto Sales Pontiac Grand Prix out duel Steve Smith, Jeff Walker, Ronnie Johnson and Rick Williams to the finish line as the entire top-five scrambled during the closing laps of the feature which had fans standing on their seats throughout the battle.
"Man this is great," said Weaver following the exciting win, "It makes us feel good knowing that we have one of the best racing facilities in the country right here in our own backyard, the kind of racing that the fans saw here tonight is what it is all about." Weaver sized up his competition as he crawled out of his winning Warrior Race Car prepared Pontiac with a thumbs-up to his fellow drivers, "This is what we ask for as competitors, a race track which allows us to race the way we raced tonight and put on a show for the fans with a great racing surface. Going up against guys like Ronnie Johnson who’s won the Dirt Track World Championship a couple of times and Steve Smith who ran second in the Million Dollar race, it was just great racing out there tonight and everybody did a super job in racing each other clean." Weaver noted fellow Crossville racer Rick Williams on his performance, "Rick’s won a lot of races here over the years and he was giving Steve fits for the lead early in the show, but we were all able to run side by side and even three wide getting around lapped traffic and it was definitely an intense race. I just hope that the fans enjoyed it as much as we did." Weaver’s first career feature win came on the high-banks of Crossville Speedway in 1988 and his most recent triumph on Friday night ran his all-time career win record to 179 feature victories. "I’m just looking forward to this coming weekend and we’ll get out there and try to do it again, but most importantly racing is definitely back at Crossville Speedway."
In addition to backing from Gunter’s Drywall and Tony’s Auto Sales, Weaver’s winning car is also sponsored by Tollett Bros. Masonry, AutoZone of Crossville, and Gunter Body Shop with horsepower provided by Vic Hill Racing Engines sponsored by Calvin Cheek of Calvin’s Market in Rockwood, TN. At the finish of the wild late model event McMinnville, TN’s Jeff Walker held on to the runner-up spot with Steve Smith, Ronnie Johnson and Rick Williams rounding out the top-five. Sixth through tenth in the final rundown were Tommy Kerr, Jimmy Nowlin, Rick Hixson, Cary Brown and Junior Brown, respectively. Steve Smith claimed the Arctic Cat Fast Qualifier Award with a lap of 13.66 seconds in time-trial qualifications. The race was slowed by only three cautions with the final yellow flag period setting up a three-lap shootout to the finish.
Wyatt Victorious in UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds - Pure-Mini Win to Ross as Baisley Tops Street Stocks
In support division action Crossville’s Brett Wyatt made a rousing run to claim the win in the UMP Open Wheel Modified class surviving an early race encounter with Chris Rickett of Rockwood to charge on to the victory. Following Wyatt to the stripe were Tim Ladd (Harriman) in second, Skimp Henry (Newport) in third with Rickett and Steve Mullinax (Crossville) completing the top-five of the finishing order. ( More….)
