Bruton Smith said Friday he believes 99.4 percent of the people in NASCAR would like to see the annual Nextel Cup awards banquet should be held in Las Vegas. But, at least for 2007, the remaining .6 percent – presuming that NASCAR’s top brass constitutes that fraction – will carry the day.
Jim Hunter, NASCAR vice president for corporate communications, said the decision has been made for the year-ending event to return to New York City again this year. The awards ceremony has been held in New York since 1981.
So at least for now Smith, the chairman of Speedway Motorsports Inc., will have to occupy himself with trying to lobby for a second Nextel Cup date for this track.
“People love to come to Las Vegas,” Smith said. “I don’t think you will talk to a driver or a fan who doesn’t want to come here. If the world is saying, ‘Let’s go back to Las Vegas,’ then it’s good for the sport. And if it’s good for the sport, let’s do it.”
Smith once again rejected the notion of moving a race from another SMI track to this one, but also said he doesn’t expect NASCAR to expand its current 36-race schedule to accommodate another event here.
“We’re not talking about moving anything,” Smith said. “I just think we need to figure out a way to do it. And we can figure out a way
