Bruton Smith said Friday he believes 99.4 percent of the people in NASCAR would like to see the annual Nextel Cup awards banquet should be held in Las Vegas. But, at least for 2007, the remaining .6 percent – presuming that NASCAR’s top brass constitutes that fraction – will carry the day.

Jim Hunter, NASCAR vice president for corporate communications, said the decision has been made for the year-ending event to return to New York City again this year. The awards ceremony has been held in New York since 1981.

So at least for now Smith, the chairman of Speedway Motorsports Inc., will have to occupy himself with trying to lobby for a second Nextel Cup date for this track.

“People love to come to Las Vegas,” Smith said. “I don’t think you will talk to a driver or a fan who doesn’t want to come here. If the world is saying, ‘Let’s go back to Las Vegas,’ then it’s good for the sport. And if it’s good for the sport, let’s do it.”

Smith once again rejected the notion of moving a race from another SMI track to this one, but also said he doesn’t expect NASCAR to expand its current 36-race schedule to accommodate another event here.

“We’re not talking about moving anything,” Smith said. “I just think we need to figure out a way to do it. And we can figure out a way

Why!

Why not have it in the South? Most fans are already there anyway. The fans would line the streets waiting to see their heros. Most of the real fans can't manage a plane ticket and the needed days off form work. KEEP IT SIMPLE! New York won't allow a track there so why should NASCAR be pushing money into that area?
Betsy

Bruton Smith

There goes Bruton Smith, the man with all the big bucks that knows what Nascar fans want. Why don't he just buyout the Waldorf and shut it down and move the Banquet to Las Vegas.Isn't that how he knows what Nascar fans want? Maybe real Nascar fans ought to buy out some of the tracks that he has bought and closed and hold our own banquet their and show Deep Pockets what we really want.

Good luck!!! :beerbang: Several people have tried to buy North Wilksboro and Bruton won't sell it. He is afraid it will come back to bite him I guess:bounce:

I thought they had finally reached an agreement on selling. :) I'll have to search for that article, unless someone else wants to. :)

North Wilkesboro Speedway sold to real estate company UPDATE: Speedway Motorsports Inc.'s Bruton Smith said he and Bob Bahre [owns New Hampshire Intl Speedway], who each own half-interest in North Wilkesboro Speedway, have signed a deal with a real estate company to negotiate a sale of the land on which the defunct track now sits.(Thatsracin)(1-25-2007)
UPDATE" Smith talked about the possible sale of North Wilkesboro Speedway, which he bought half of about 10 years ago in order to launch Texas Motor Speedway in the Fort Worth-Dallas area. That move helped kick off 10 years of major expansion by the NASCAR Cup tour. Smith said that he and Bob Bahre, who bought the other half of the Wilkes County track and took that tour date to his Loudon, N.H., track, have agreed to put the track and land in the hands of a realtor, who, Smith said, thinks he can sell it. The price tag is, as it has been for several years, $12 million, Smith said. How to make a profitable return on such a $12 million investment has always been a question mark. Smith said it won't be for racing. "I don't think they're looking at it for racing, but rather other events, like a major national fiddlers' convention," he said. "I hope the buyer is successful in whatever he wishes to go. We'll have to wait and see. It was just a phone call with
