Cup Drivers in Nationwide...Good or Bad?

No, I don't mean good or bad for the series - that's been hammered like wrought iron - but for the drivers careers.

With yesterday's NNS win, Edwards moved ahead of Harvick in all time NNS wins and with some comments made in another thread, it got me thinking about the all time NNS winners who are also top cup drivers.

Kyle Busch 51 wins
Mark Martin 49 wins
Carl Edwards 38 wins
Kevin Harvick 37 wins
Jeff Burton 27 wins

Not one Sprint Cup amongst the lot of them.

Thoughts?

I wrote about this last season. Even tweeted Brad the stats on JG, TS, JJ and other cup champions. Brad went 1,2,3,1 last year running just Cup, then his results quickly fell off during the chase when he ran both. I honestly feel that a rookie cup driver benifits from NW for his first year, but should quickly limit his NW races to less than 5 or 6 after that. Hanging in NW is just a way of telling yourself you aren't good enough to get your glory in cup. Maybe the Cup and NW cars are close enough to create a little hesitation when driving a Cup car. Who kows what it is, but the real good Cup drivers stay away from NW. Tony runs a lot of races outside Cup, but they are mostly on dirt.

I think it has to do with the needs of each driver. Jeff Gordon said early on in his career that it was a distraction to race them and he could learn what he needed from watching the races and talking to the drivers. Another thought is there are not now and havent been for a long time any cup regulars from the HMS camp that runs the NNS on a regular basis and look at their track record. A few cup drivers over the years have stated that a NNS or Truck win helped to put them back on track but poor showings in the NNS or Trucks has the opposite effect. It seems to be a " to each his own " scenario.

How many Cup Champions over the past 15-20 years have run heavy NNS schedules? By heavy I mean more than 5 or 6 races.

Still packing it up. All of the stuff from our old 5er is in the garage in piles. We are slowly going through everything trying to decide what we put into this new one. We've eliminated a lot of stuff but it's still time consuming none the less.

The new rig passed the first test. I am able to fit 3 - 30 packs of Bud Lights in the fridge along with a couple pounds of hamburger, so I'm all set. I just need to stop at the store and get a bag of hamburger buns and 3 more case of beer and I should be good for the week! ;)

Here's a couple of pics as I have it set up in the driveway this morning loading it up. Bristol bound in 6 days! :D

The bottom bunk in the rear of the new tagalong at the Brickyard, got to keepem well rested. Four 18 packs got me through. As I told you I love that damn fiver, looked at some just like it.

FB said ( a couple of weeks ago ) he wanted to see it, here it is, the new rig, 28' 11" of fun. It was storming at the Brickyard so we had the awning and outside stuff secured. The slideout is on the other side.

I've never seen a camper with a back porch.
I like to refer to it as the party deck. ;)

Damn fine looking pillow you have there!

Nice Camper
Thanks, we've been planning an upgrade for some time now. We're getting ready to create a lot of new memories in this one.

Nice unit Johali. Is that a pic from where you were set up @ Indy? PM me a link some time to where you stayed there. That is not all that far of a haul for us to hit that track sometime but I've always wondered about camping there. Also, what sat system are you using there, DirecTV? I'm guessing that's you dish setup on the ground there?

Glad to hear you had that awning secured. We've lost three separate awnings in storms over the past 20+ years of rving.

DP you asked about camping at the Brickyard. This is the view of the main gate area, turn one on the left and turn two on the right, from the chair by the front door.

A cup drivers win in NNS counts just as much as a pro ball team beating your high school team, IMHO of course.
Look at the advantages they have, it's a fluke when a NNS regular wins.
