Team Owner
We were tossing this question around over the weekend when it came up that in the Nationwide series the owner of the series winning car did not take home the Owners championship in that series. Roush vs. Gibbs.
Is the separation of Owners points vs. Driver points a moot point now with the Chase in the Cup Series?
It seems that the owner of the winning Chase car is always going to win the Owners championship because the Chase has changed the points distribution. Why bother with it in the Cup series any more?
Yeah, I know that this is way out there but think about this scenario for a minute. Say the combination of Michael Waltrip, Mark Martin & Brian Vickers had split up the season into each running twelve weeks in the the car. Now this is really out there but I'm going to use this to prove my point..... Each of these three drivers wins half the races that they run in that #55 car for a total of 18 wins over the duration of the season for the #55. Because none of the three drivers could possibly make the Chase only running a third of the season, the bonus points for making the Chase are lost thus eliminating the car owner from winning the Owners Championship. Below is the final 2012 Owners Standings that clearly shows how unless you are in the Chase you may as well forget the Owners Championship. I know the fans don't really celebrate the accomplishment by the owners but I'd bet they do. Something just doesn't seem right about that to me.
Yeah, I know..... It's going to be a long off season.
