Why is it Robby Gordon can always seem to run races with sponsorship when all he is at best is an upper-class field filler but big name teams with proven records like Yates Racing cannot find sponsors?

I just found it odd this weekend as I watched Robby with a sponsor and recalled all the struggles Yates has had this year with both his cars.

A lot of sponsors like drivers who will commit to promotions and other things.

And they like personality.

Think about it, if you could sponsor Elliott Sadler or Jimmie Johnson.

You know Elliott Sadler's going to mention you everytime he's on the air. He's got personality and he's going to attract fans to your product. And he's going to lure in new fans.

Or you can have Jimmie Johnson win the race and say (in a flat voice) "We had a good Lowe's Chevrolet today. I wanna thank my sponsors..."

Hmmm... seems to me a sponsor would rather have a 2-time champion doing their commercials than someone who never finishes well. Oh, and that champion driver does a LOT of commercials for you and does well on film. Yeah, I'd pick Robby and Elliot over Jimmie.

But Andy (and this is rare) does have a point here. In fact, a few weeks ago Dave Despain mentioned some of the most marketable drivers from the standpoint of the sponsors, and people like Kyle Petty and Michael Waltrip were near or at the top of the list. From a marketing standpoint, it's not always about winning, but about well you can sell their product, how well you come across on TV....

Well, that eliminates Gordon. ;)
Monster is the only company paying the bills for his dirt racing. That's only 5 races a year, so they can afford to be on the cup car every blue moon.

And Robby does get his cars on TV every week, however need be.

But, people like Elliott Sadler. People like Robby Gordon, and especially after Montreal last year.

There are a lot of people who don't like Jimmie Johnson. A lot of those people will say it's because he has no personality.

And they're right. Johnson and Kenseth are, for whatever reason, boring.

I'm talking about their commercials, Andy. I find both Jimmie and Matt rather bland, too. I'll bet you there's a lot of people who don't even follow NASCAR who know who Jimmie is and would never know who Elliott and Robby are. A lot of people don't like Tony, but they like some of his commercials - like the current one where he's supposedly teaching Joey how to do home repair and the one with the kids "driving the cars" by remote. I think Jimmie does a good job on his Lowe's commercials. He can say things over and over again until he gets it right for a 30 sec. commercial.

I think Robby and Elliott would both be personable on commercials, but I don't think the general public would recognize them. Mikey W's commercials are about the only thing I really like about him. ;)

What are you doing Jimmie?
Welding, Chad.

Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are. And to end the commercial with it was a stroke of genius. Like WNY said, people don't even have to know he's a race car driver for that to be an effective seller.

I wonder if Jimmie actually knows how to weld?

I agree, the napa/lowes/home depot commercials are getting good right now.

Probably more so than Mikey rents his stuff from Aaron's. Or any number of other driver commercials.

Thats not entirely true. Robby struggles to get sponsorship like many. Last year he ran a couple of races with no sponsor.
He still has a few friends who help him out I think
