There was a time -- before interviews in Playboy and Rolling Stone, before he was an author on the New York Times best-seller list -- when Dale Earnhardt Jr. was just another Busch Series driver trying to make it in the big, bad racing world.

Sure, he had a few things going for him. His name, for starters. That alone opened doors to funding and equipment most would never dream of. Yet it was up to him to get it done behind the wheel, and he, to be sure, made the most of the opportunity.

How amazing it was to watch his career progress. The first time we met, in 1997, it was at Hickory and he didn’t even have a full-fledged transporter. His car was pulled to the track with a dually and gooseneck trailer. Rain washed out qualifying, and he didn’t make the field.

Very interesting. I read a very good atricle on him in ESPN the magazine sometime last year. It was very good also. I would post it if I could find it, but I'm not very good with posting stuff like that. ^_^
