Earnhardt's hometown removes his honor flags
From Charlotte Observer, wire reports
Friday, Jul. 25, 2008
KANNAPOLIS - The late Dale Earnhardt's hometown is taking down banners honoring the NASCAR great, at the request of a billionaire developer who is bringing a client to town Saturday.

The Salisbury Post also reported on Friday that the developer's company doesn't want the "Dale Trail" banners going up again.

I live near Kannapolis.....this is sad that he's doing this.

But Kannapolis needs his investment big time, the Pillotex plant (where many of the Earnhardt family worked, shut down a few years back, biggest lay off in NC)...he's not going anywhere as his project is already under development.

Did you know................David Murdock, the man who asked for the removal of the "Dale Trail" flags is the same person who paid for them ????

David Murdock not only donated the flags but also paid for the nine foot bronze statue of Earnhardt.

Seems the City of Kannapolis tourism and commerce organizations feel it is time to move on by keeping an eye on the future.

Earnhardts history will live on with or without the flags.

Dale Earnhardt Sr put Kannapolis on the map.If they are taking down the flag's they should at least put up some type of land marker's .

Per Mike Legg, City Manager, “Thoughts are to include a driving CD taking people to all the points of interest along the Dale Trail,” he wrote. “Also thoughts are being discussed of installing attractive informational markers at key interest points (Ralph Earnhardt's grave, the D.E. Plaza, etc.). There is also the possibility or a new Dale/NASCAR banners being created to honor the sport and the legacy of Dale. This notion of the banners being removed permanently is simply false information.”

Actually Pillowtex put Kannapolis on the map......6500 people lost their jobs when it closed.

Thats why he is building the tech center there.

I'm about as big of an Earnhardt fan as there is...but David Murdock is doing a lot of good for Kannapolis at time for when they need it.

Kannapolis and Earnhardt go hand in hand for sure. Back in about '98 or so (Guido can correct me on this date I think) a bunch of us met at a restaurant there for a get together. I had a new Jeep Wrangler and on the front a nice new Bill Elliott tag. When we finished and went out to the car in the parking lot, I found that someone had broken my tag and pulled it off my car. There is only one kind of fan who would have done that.

I have never messed with anyone elses driver of choise stuff. They paid good money for it, and can root for who ever they want. I'm an Earnhardt fan, but would not do that.

Lappy, if you've been to the tracks, as I know you have, you'll no doubt have seen plenty of people who would trash another fans stuff. It's too bad there are fans like that, but that's the world we live in today.
