Not long ago, everyone was going nuts over nuts. A few short days away from that controversy yet it almost seems like a lifetime ago. So NASCAR mandated, much to the delight of Tony Stewart and the other vocal few, that the lug nuts be installed in a safe and secure manner. Well, how's that workin' out? Not well it seems. Oh well, maybe we can move back on to lowering the banking @ Talladega..... that other hot topic that went by the wayside.

My head hurts.

My only thought on it is is why do the teams bitch about NASCAR having to do something to police them when they have zero intentions on following on through with the procedure to begin with? Hypocrites, each and every one of them.

So they were whining about the rule before because of safety, so Nascar went back to letting the little babies have their way. Now they are still not doing all 5 until the end of the race. I think in the video that they said they make sure they do all five on the last stop because Nascar checks them. So I take it they are checking to see if they are tight or not. So now maybe Nascar will come out with a new rule and have them put away the air tools and go to a 4way wrench.

They can only enforce the rule before the race and after the race. Video can show teams tightening 4 during the race but I think it would be unfair if NASCAR penalized those who get TV time. It is not a safety issue until a failure causes an injury which probably won't happen because a driver will probably pit before a failure occurs.

But the drivers and teams, including stewart was so concerned because they said it was a safety issue. I agree with you though because the drivers will have to come in if it starts coming loose. That is why I was hoping Brian would tell the teams that they were unhappy when Nascar pulled them in only to find that all was well, so he let them police themselves and they blew it. To me Brian blew it.

This pretty much mirrors what the video said in DPKs original post. Are we going to see an amended lug nut rule?

  • Are teams playing games with lugnut rule? NASCAR initiated a rule that teams must now have all five lug nuts "installed in a safe and secure manner throughout all national series events." The new rules went into effect two weeks ago at Talladega Superspeedway. Immediately following that race, NASCAR secured the cars coming off the track onto pit road and checked the security of the lug nuts. A similar procedure was in place at Kansas Speedway last weekend, and NASCAR cleared all cars during post-race inspection. But that didn't stop conspiracy theorists from debating whether Saturday night's winning driver, Kyle Busch, had five lug nuts tight on all four wheels of his #18 Toyota at Kansas Speedway. Photos - though inconclusive - appeared on social media showing Busch's wheels, and there was plenty of comment on the internet claiming the photos show all the lugs on Busch's car weren't tight.
The discussion continued on Tuesday when Joe Piette Jr., pit crew coach for Stewart-Haas Racing, was a guest on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Piette indicated his belief that certain lugs indeed weren't tight. "Obviously, they took it a step further than having to have five lug nuts tight, if you will. But they had five installed. So no harm, no foul.
Rumors abound of teams attempting to game the system. When Piette was asked whether teams had considered using an unthreaded lug nut and simply gluing it to the hub, the veteran coach replied, "That's a loaded question." However, he added, "It's absolutely possible. If you haven't, I don't think you're a true racer."(Motorsport)(5-11-2016)
