Just bought my Southern 500 tix along with shuttle tix from the Florence, SC Civic Center. Never been. Anyone care to make a recommendation w/regard to a hotel? I think we'd like to stay close in to town. Thanks.

My only suggestion is to be careful and do your research. There are some pretty disgusting motels in that area. Now, you did ask about "hotels" so you might be better off. I normally can't afford a "hotel".

Florence is only so fancy lol a lot of hotels along 95.

I just flipped on the weather channel randomly and they believe there's a tornado heading towards Darlington!!

Consider Sumter, about 45 minutes away on US 401. It has a major Air Force base so most of the mid-tier hotels are represented.

Check out Camden, also 45 minutes or so on I-20. The east side of Columbia is about another 20 minutes.

Myrtle Beach is a good idea if you're taking a longer vacation and want to do more than just go to the race. The downside is it's about 90 minute down US 501, with small town speed zones scattered all along it. County Mounties just live for that post-race traffic. You're also competing for hotel space with everybody trying to jam in an end-of-summer vacation; expect to pay holiday rates.

At this date, getting anything semi-acceptable in Florence will be hit or miss. If you do stay in Florence, be sure to eat at the Red Dog Cafe

EDIT - Hey, ex-Jarhead; can you get guest housing at Shaw AFB or Ft. Jackson?

Ah, Aynor. The speed limit drops to 45 just past the last, largest blue-and-white 'Myrtle Beach Visitors' Center' on the right. Not long after that, just about where the divided median ends, it drops to 35. (I've long suspected the distance in between is the shortest legally permitted by highway department standards.) On the way out, it doesn't come back up to 55 until after the new overpass.

Nah, I don't drive that stretch much. :D Wanna hear about the area around the Marion bypass?

Last I went, we stayed about 65 minutes away from the track at a town even smaller than Darlington... I think it was a hotel and a gas station and that was all it seemed. I had the impression most did the same setup... get a place as close as possible, but still a little drive on race morning to get there.

Absolutely beautiful state!

For what it's worth.... I live in laurinburg an hour from the track. Cheap hotels around here and some good food to be had. Just throwing it out there. Gets a bad rep but it's not a bad town.
