Darrell Waltrip on racing hurt: ‘NASCAR has to save us from ourselves’

Junior seems to have done a fine job of dealing with his problems without outside help / interference. But he has several advantages guys like Michael McDowell and Reed Sorenson don't have.

Good story. Ricky Rudd said of NASCAR. “A driver didn’t use to have the luxury or the option of sitting out a race. Your championship season was over if that happened, so the system wasn’t set up for it back in the day.” DW pointed out that bump stops takes the suspension out of the car and impacts the driver.

Why not mandate concussion screening after a wreck of a certain number of Gs? As far as I know, Junior only found out he had a concussion because of his own choice to visit a Doctor.

It doesn't matter to me what the issue is concerning a driver's health as if he is suffering from something that represents a danger to him or someone else he should not be driving.

If a stick and ball player becomes injured for a period of time it is highly unlikely they will win the scoring title or be the rushing champ that year and rightfully so. It should be the same way for drivers as if you miss time and it causes you to miss the 10 race lottery then so be it. Injury and illness are part of life and if you are unable to perform your job during that time there are consequences.

An injured stick and ball player physically can't compete but an injured race car driver can.

I recall when Hamlin came back from an injury (prematurely IMO) the announcers were complimenting him for "playing hurt".

Actually, an NFL quarterback can miss games and still win the Super Bowl.

Last year, elements of the NFL media wanted Tony Romo to be named NFL MVP. Their reasoning, the Cowboys sucked without him, proving he was the greatest player in all of the NFL.

The NFL is a team sport. Tom Brady can miss four games this year and still win the Super Bowl. This was the reasoning a lot of NASCAR insiders used to justify last year's championship.

"Actually, an NFL quarterback can miss games and still win the Super Bowl."

It seems to me that you're confusing team accomplishments with individual accomplishments.

Players don't win Super Bowls, teams do.

And yes, the Patriots can still win the Super Bowl this year even with their star performer out for the first four games.

Your analogy only works if NASCAR season championships were given to race teams (i.e. the #18 team ) regardless of who "quarterbacked" the car in a particular race.

And although I'm greatly impressed by what Kyle Busch accomplished on the track last year, the fact that he was awarded the season championship still makes me a little squeamish.

NASCAR is a team sport too with the pit crew, a gas man with sore knee could be worse then a driver with a sore knee

It is stinkin thinkin, IMO.

Traditional concussion screening test . "How many fingers am I holding up? " , is there some new test ?
