Darrell Waltrip?

I'm brand-new as a NASCAR fan but I've noticed this Waltrip guy tends to piss a few people off. Now I know Tony Stewart has a bit of a temper of whatnor, but he really ripped into the guy after a race this year.

Lots of fans don't seem to like him either. It's not that I'm saying it's wrong it's just I simply don't know why. I haven't watched a race wih him as commentator. Can someone tell me why he's obnoxious?

It' hard to put your finger on why Darrell Waltrip (shortened to DW) is so disliked. He talks too much for one...........he's one guy that can talk for 15 mins and never tell you anything. :) He retired as a driver some years ago (about 5 or 6, I think) and he thinks the race cars are still the way they were back then.........5 years in this sport is ancient history. When he's commentating he has this very irritating habit of telling one of his "stories" and he will drag it out forever.........and if something should happen on the track while he's jabbering away (such as a pass for the lead, a wreck, someone blowing up, or maybe scraping the wall) he will not interrupt himself to get back to the race. He was not really all that popular as a driver either.........he was what one might call a rough driver (almost as rough as the late Dale Earnhardt). And now, he's a big advocate of every driver being "Mr Clean" out on the track........something's wrong there!!

His little thing with Tony Stewart earlier this year revolved around Tony doing some pretty questionable things on the track (actually, Tony really was being a nuisance on the track with his aggressive style of racing.......sort of like DW in his "glory days"). DW and his fellow commentator Larry MacReynolds decided they should publicly lay into Tony for his actions on the track.......and they spent a week taking Tony to task every opportunity they got. Tony didn't get any air time to defend himself or even comment about the tongue lashing he was receiving. Well, they interviewed him one day before a race and Tony unloaded with both barrels!! Sort of knocked DW and Larry Mac back a little.........they thought it was unnecessary. Never did they stop to think that what they were doing to Tony was also unnecessary. I think that "battle" could be called a draw!! :D

Anyway, that's why I'm no DW fan. That's also why I wish FOX and FX would get rid of him in the broadcast booth.

And BTW............Welcome the forum!!!!!!!!!!!!

DEW, yeah, he retired from Cup driving, but keep in mind that he is driving yet today in the truck series and as such, is able to keep up with today's technology. DW is no different today that he was when he burst into the series years ago. You found out quick that you either liked him or you didn't. I was one of those who did like the man, but it isn't going to make a big difference as to how I describe him though. As to why DW is so disliked by so many, well it's all because of his mouth. Quite simply, as you can tell, many people just don't like a ****y driver. DW is probably the quintisential ****y driver of all time. I suspect even more ****ier than Curtis Turner and that's quite ****y.

:XXROFL: Hey Exodeath, Have you heard him sing yet?? If not, you haven't missed anything!!

You wouldn't be talkiing about "You took a fine time to leave me Loose Wheel" would you, Burtonfan? :D :XXROFL:

Welcome to the forum, my friend. It's always good to have another race fan to chat with, but a little word of advice.. watch what you say to some people on here.

Exodeath??? Whew!! LOL

Well, to start, I lost all respect for ole DW his last year of racing.
He did not "rretire" gracefully and with the smiles and laurels
that were due him. Noooooooooooooooooo, he whimpered,
cried, moaned, made a general pitiful arse of himself that
entire last year. He couldn't even qualify to run in a race!!! That
upset him so bad, that he "BOUGHT" carl Long's ride the one time
Carl quallyed, for the Cup race. It was disgusting, and embarrassing!!!!!

So, he plays big mouth on the block when FOX takes it's turn
at telecasting the Cup races. And he tries to shove his opinions right down all the viewers throats. And yes, as DE_W2 said, he and Larry Mac got all
over Tony Stewart unmercifully when Tony was going through a terrible time. Tony couldn't even shove a spoon into his own mouth the right way
for a while, and Them two in the booth rode him to death!!!!
So, that is MY reason that I really don't care for ole DW, records or no!!!!

Speaking as a lifelong DW despiser, I know why I and thoudands of others can't stand him.

It goes back to his driving days. He was brash, obnoxious, pushy, and irritatting. Those were his good qualities. No doubt about his talent...he was a good driver. But his personality and his moth earned him the nickname "Jaws". He was a brat and a whiner. He once wrecked another driver's car on the cooldown lap after the race. It was that driver's only car, and it just so happened to be his only career win. Jaws kept a man named Lennie Pond from taking his car to victory lane after his only career win because he wrecked it after the race was over. Real nice guy.

He spent the entire decade of the 1980's whining and crying. He is the primary reason we have something called restrictor plates at two of our tracks. He stated that he was tired of following "that red Thunderbird", meaning Bill Elliott, a man who dominated speedways before restrictor plates. Waltrip's incessant whining, non-stop crying, and ceaseless belly-aching are among the big reasons our sport was introduced to the single most dangerous change ever made to a stock car, all so he could keep up with a Ford.

Plus, if you ever get the chance to hear him, you'll know why people dislike him. He's a buffoon. He'll comment for ten laps about how loose a certain is on the track, then the pit reporter will interview the crew chief of that car who will say that the car is so tight the driver can't control it. This happens at least once every five races.

There are those who like Jaws. I know not why, I'm sure they can tell you Lord knows I couldn't. I've seen people say he's funny, or interesting, or adds something to the broadcast. That's fine. Make up your own mind. Just please know that he is far from representative of that era of drivers. Most of those guys had brains and common sense, despite Jaws' total lack of both.

Exactly! And didn't he try "I Want To Talk About Me"? Or was that Mickey? ^_^

I can't believe I forgot, and apparently everyone else did too..........."Boooog.....", I mean "Boooog....", crap, "Bboo......"!! I give up!! It won't come out!!! :) He has the most irritating, cutesy dialog that he insists on repeating at the start of every race he commentates!! :(

:) Yeah, but he won 84 races and 3 championships! Who else has EVER done THAT? Of the present drivers only Jeff Gordon has even a CHANCE of beating that 84 wins. Prolly some of you are exactly like the Jeff haters of today... you just don't like him because he is REAL GOOD! His record puts him in with only a very few elite drivers. Everyone here must respect that.

200 wins and 7 Championships might beat that! :)

Here are the top 10 winners in the MODERN ERA!

1 Darrell Waltrip 84
2 Dale Earnhardt 76
3 Cale Yarborough 69
4 Jeff Gordon 69
5 Richard Petty 60
6 Bobby Allison 55
7 Rusty Wallace 55
8 David Pearson 45
9 Bill Elliott 44
10 Mark Martin 34

Thats good enough for me to see that DW was quite THE driver. Also shows me where Jeff is among present drivers. Jeff is the only present driver that has a chance of catching DW and it is indeed a small chance at that.

You are kidding me aren't you?

It took Darrel over 20 years to get those numbers, Jeff has only been in "Cup" for just over 10 years. He already has MORE Championships and will easily surpass super mouth in wins too.

:) Howdy Eagle1
I'd like to see it too. But the more equal NASCAR makes the cars the less chance there will be for ONE driver to win lots of races.. Just like this year... who knows which car will be in the front when the checkered flag is waved in Talladega? Yeah he has enough time left but will nascar take the driving expertise out of raceing?
Betsy :)

EMP,

As far as a I know, NASCAR had used restrictor plates in an attempt to equalize horsepower several years (early 1970's) before DW came on the scene and I had been led to believe by most of the folks at NASCAR that Bobby Allison nearly getting into the grandstand at Talladega was the reason for the plates since then.
Never heard anyone say anything about DW not being able to keep up with Bill Elliot having anything to do with the use of the plates.

DW came into Winston Cup with a big mouth; no doubt about that. (Cale Yarborough even nicknamed him Jaws.) The important thing was that whenever he ran his mouth, he had the balls and the ability to back it up.
I'd have to say that his record does a pretty good job of verifying that fact.

I believe Exodeath was asking why people dislike him.

I can only speak for myself but I don't care for him because he constanly engages his mouth before anything else and although I'm not Stewart's biggest fan, I don't think Stewart deserved to be trashed by Waltrip for doing stuff of which he himself was a master.

Stewart's statement about Waltrip only racing because of provisionals was the perfect antidote for Waltrip's enlarged ego.

That's the way I read it too Patrick!! :D

I stated my reasons and the context of the question presented doesn't mean I have to despute or produce any stats about him or anyone else to justify my thoughts on DW. :)

I believe that people dislike DW because of his mouth.

In his prime though he may have been the best driver in Nascar including Earnhardt.

Patrick ans DE_W2, ...........me to.
A question was asked, and I answered with my feelings.

Don't know how Jeff Gordon or any other driver got into this.
