I know this is much later than you were looking for but I thought a number of drivers - in both races - backed-off towards the end.

No doubt trying to save their equipment by being smart enough to not race with the desperate "go or go homers" in mid pack.

There was some darned good racing, however, with Hendrick /Gibbs/Evernham/Roush/Watrip all looking pretty stout at times.

I thought Gordon looked pretty strong but he just didn't have any help. Everytime he got a run Kasey Kahne would back off.
