Daytona International Speedway could look vastly different in two or three years.

Exactly how and when is still to be determined. And along those construction lines, comes the inevitable question of whether the track can spend a couple of years re-doing the entire frontstretch grandstands and façade without disrupting its traditional NASCAR race dates.

DIS President Joie Chitwood, who unveiled some preliminary drawings last week of the project but has not yet gotten approval to build from the board of parent company International Speedway Corp., said he thinks 2014 would be too soon for any construction impact on the schedule.

There is talk of the Daytona 500 possibly not being the first race of the season because of this upgrade.

That would suck, because they would surely end up at Charlotte.
Whoa there cowboy. I thought you were anti Talladegtona? I figured this would make the anti-restrictor plate contingent very happy on here. Anyhow, no change in heck that they would start the season in Charlotte. Homestead would be more likely I'd guess. Charlotte is SMI. No way Brian is giving up those $'s

Yeah let's start the season in front of 20 people. LOL.

Maybe the year they have to move the Daytona 500 will be the year the Jaguars win the Super Bowl so the Jacksonville-Orlando market will have something to cheer for.

No contradiction. I'll take a wreckfest over a snorefest anyday.

Open the season at Homestead? Never. But you're right about the bucks. What was I thinking?

The only way you'll get fans in the stands at Homestead, or Fontana for that matter, is if you had a Miami Heat or LA Lakers game being played in the infield during the race.

I having trouble remembering all of the tracks that we are supposed to hate on here. We don't like restrictor plate tracks. Homestead is out as well now. Throw Indy in there. Toss all of those 1.5ers in that bucket too. Oh, and don't forget Pocono. Then there's California and Michigan. Loudon sucks too, right? I can't remember for sure on that one. We like Richmond & Martinsville. Bristol we hate because they changed it. Road courses are good. Phoenix? That one's okay, right? It's a damn good thing that nobody on here has any say about the schedule. We'd be done racing by March. :p

Didn't they just have some kind of renovation project a few years ago? I could be thinking of something else.

What do they plan to do, build an elaborate racing megaplex a la Yas Marina?

I'm not sure what good moving the dates a couple of weeks would do. It seems more likely that any construction delays would be in terms of months, not weeks.

Run the July race as usual and start construction. Since the opening date will have to stay at an ISC track, open at Homestead. (I rather see it at a track that isn't on the current schedule, but we know that ain't gonna happen.) That gives a year between July races, then run the second Daytona race ON THE ROAD COURSE as the season closer. That takes care of not having two RP races in the Chase, and gets a road course into it.

Brian, you're welcome.

Nice. I could live with 2 homie races if we get to see nascar run the road course.

I'm fly with that.

A thought. Road courses dont use main grandstands, it's all about being in the corners/on the concourse. So technically they could start the season siamese with the Rolex 24, and not have a problem with the grandstands being in construction, because they generally aren't used.

If the changes can make the track really cool for racing I'd say go for it. During the down time you'd have to be satisfied with "Thinking of the track you'll get".

Are they changing the track? I thought the grandstands were all that were being affected. Didn't they just repave that place? That would have been the time to 'fix' it ('fix' = knock down the banking).

going by the rendering, cars will be able to race stacked 2 high.

The Chinese put up a 30 story hotel in just 15 days.*

We're stuck in the one nail, one board at a time construction mentality. Modular construction is the way to build today. No reason modules can't be trucked in, or constructed on site and erected like Legos. The added expense of trucking or building modules on site will be off set in labor savings.
