Over last year, that is. Looks like all of the Stage Breaks are our alternatives to the dreaded debris cautions.....

Cautions were up 10 percent this past Cup season compared to 2016, while debris cautions were at their lowest total since 2001.

The results come after a year where questions were raised about if stage breaks would impact the number of cautions in a race and if there would be a decline in debris cautions called this season.

There were 296 cautions this season compared to 269 in 2016, according to race reports for each year. There were 298 cautions during the 2015 season — which did not have stage breaks.

The 2017 season featured 21 debris cautions, a decrease of 58.9 percent from the 2016 season when there were 51 debris cautions called, according to Cup race reports.

With two stage breaks per race, it gave NASCAR the opportunity to clean the track if it needed it. Also, the five-minute clock teams had to repair cars damaged in crashes, and the rule that any car that went to the garage after a crash was done, likely kept some vehicles off the track that would have caused subsequent cautions by dropping parts and pieces.

Yeh but the stage cautions were up ×4

2X but who's counting?

In reality since there were 0 from 1947-2016 you couldn't multiply that by any number to get to whatever number of stage breaks we had this year.

Are you talking cautions or just debris cautions. I would think the lower number of debris cautions was do to the rule they could not do all the body repair and send the cars back out with pieces falling off the cars.

There may have been some bogus cautions this year but I don't recall seeing any but in years past you could count on them in the majority of races. There will always be stoppages that could go either way but the out and out BS variety seem to have gone for now.

Do you think if they had fixed this a year earlier that Carl might still be racing?

I know you can spell. Not nice. I got a post edited for name calling.

Well, at least this confirms that some of the debris caution were phony just to bunch up the field again.

I think the Five Minute Repair clock is also responsible for bringing down debris caution. It probably had a larger impact than the stage racing did.

I agree. I think that a lot to do with it. Plus, with stage racing, there wasn't the need for the "stinking up the show" cautions either.

Ask your medical insurance provider if your coverage will allow you to switch back to name-brand medications. The generics obviously aren't getting the job done.

I liked the racing this year, even though Toyota was handed the trophy when nascar let them get a jump on everyone else with their 2018 Camry racing the older models. Ford better step up and bring something new next year.
