Defy The Odds: For Brad Keselowski, one race changed everything

I have to admit you had me there for a while. I thought we were going to get through a whole day without another new Keselowski thread from you. ;) Enjoy it while it lasts. You never know when it will be the last. It's been 18 years since my driver won a championship. I didn't have a place to tout my drivers accomplishments back then but you do have the forum so have at it. Besides, I'd rather have an off season of daily Keselowski threads than having to endure the thought of reading about 6-time.

The original link is a great story, and one of my favorite Brad moments. That's the way I like to see it happen a kid gets an opportunity and knocks it out of the park. No Papa, daddies money, who you know etc... Just driving the crap out the thing, turning heads and moving on to better things.

When I saw this thread I knew you were okay, thought for a while you were ill.

Now that I don't understand . The Dillon boys never seem to be able to get clear of their family relationship but Brad gets a pass ?

Papa will get the boys in a cup car, Brad just got a rag tag truck shot from the family that was unsustainable

Bottom line, the system worked the way it is supposed to for Bad Brad.

Paul "Daddy's Money" Menard would not be a CUP driver without Menard's sponsorship.
The Dillon boys appear to be good racers but certainly have benifited from family connections.
Brad will always be Bob's Son and I am sure that Bob's participation in ARCA and NA$$CAR opened some doors for the kid.

Not many owner/operators out there these days. These drivers are all out there because someone has given them a shot. Brad owes and has given great props to Earnhatdt Jr. for his climb into the Cup ranks. There was a good piece on this during last weeks pre race show.

And Ryan Blaney, and Ryan Truex, and Cory LaJoie , and Brandon MacReynolds , and Ross Kenseth ,and driver x and on and on.

There are differences, Menard had enough money to go through the learning secure with the finances, that is gentler way less pressurized atmosphere. The Dillon boys have talent but they have a wealth of coaching resources within the organization, and a known road map to one of papa's cup cars.

Brad and others with some connections didn't have the same security. When Brad got in the truck, he had to make it happen, there was no promises beyond that race. Thank goodness he got it done and caught Jrs attention when he did. The Dillon might have done as well under the same pressure, but they will not to..

No doubt! Brad owes a big debt to JOONYER but the fact that Bob was a racer didn't hurt!
Jimmie is a perfect example of a driver who was noticed and promoted thru a mentoring program - namely, the Jeff Gordon Institute! ;-}

...and so on, and so on, and so on...

Brad was running the team when Samson Stone screwed them out of $3.5 million and sunk the company. He had 2 other teams go under while he drove for them. I hope Roger doesn't go broke.

If he does HMS will pick him up in 2014.

With all due respect to Bob Keselowski, he ain't quite to the level of a John Menard or Richard Childress in terms of money or gravitas.

Jeff Burton was asked last year (or was it this year?) what he thought about Paul Menard and his daddy's company writing the checks and Burton said something that really struck me, (paraphrasing) "Nobody would be here without their dad." I mean, think about it, how many guys in Sprint Cup today got their start because their old man let them race a late model when they were 16 or something. Practically every driver in this business leans on family connections somewhere to get where they are.

There's lots of cup guys who don't win races. It would be silly for Menard to sponsor someone else when his son is a good enough driver who isn't out there causing wrecks. One thing I would demand is that Paul mentions the sponsor every chance he gets, because he never does.

Yeah, the one thing about Menard, he did go through the ranks to get to Cup. I remember watching him race ARTGO here in Wisconsin 10-12 years ago.

Maybe his ascension to Cup was always guaranteed but nobody can say he went right there without paying his dues at the lower levels. My two cents on the issue.
