Geez, never thought i'd see Pocono speeds at Dega'.
Whens the last time qualifying laps were in the 170's at a superspeedway?

They made the plates too small, what they should of done is left them alone and put that wicker bill on the roof. I was watching an old race the other day with those, it seemed to allow them to draft by, no 2 car draft crap. They punch a bigger hole through the air like the trucks.

They could be running 195mph and it would still be ridiculous to watch. Qualifying means so little @ these restrictor plate races. That being said..... Go Jr. :D

Weird.

But as dpkimmel2001 said, qualifying doesn't mean much here. You'll probably still have some top qualifiers purposely move to the rear in the early laps to avoid trouble. Maybe not as much as we've seen in the past because of this two-car tandem racing, but perhaps a few.

They made the plates smaller in hopes of getting them to pack up again? I'm not an engineer of aerodynamics but won't it be the same thing as Daytona only slower? The shape of the car hasn't changed so why would the drafting?

I don't know. For me, it's noticeably slower. I can see it.
Hornish's lap disallowed.........Robbie must be Mayfields stepbrother.. :D

It definitely is noticable...extremely noticable!

I also just noticed (well, just turned it on, so of course I just noticed) that instead of speds the ticker on top actually shows lap times. Guess they are trying to cove up the fact the speeds are so poor.

I guess the Talladega 500 is gonna be a joke. See you at Saluda for real racing tomorrow. :beerbang:

Why can't Nascar just do something right at these plate tracks, they continue to F it up.

No need to worry. As soon as they're out there on the track together they'll be running the upper 190's again just like yesterday in practice. You guys can't possibly get that much excitement out of 'arranging day', can you?

Yeah, and the closing rate on a lap car will be obscene. That, in itself is more dangerous than letting them run at 201+. They're fixing a problem that doesn't exist at this track.

Exactly what i was thinking, you get out of the draft you are going to be goin almost 20mph slower than a pack of 2. This just gets worse at the plate tracks and they have no desire to fix it.

For the most part it's always been that way since the restrictor plate was introduced. In the draft, fast. Out of it, slow. If you are running by yourself, you are screwed.

Anyone see the Nationwide pre-race? Knaus said that it's not going to be long and you'll see three cars running together. Hey, let's just keep this thing going. Next there will by three, then four, then etc..... Before you know it we'll have come full circle. :D

Some Gordon thoughts/quotes about qualifying.....

Jeff Gordon calls qualifying (with speeds not even topping 180) a snoozer. Wants different plate so they can hit 200 mph in qual.

"That had nothing to do with me. Anybody could do this at that speed."

About his BLAZING pole speed, Jeff Gordon said... "I felt like I could walk faster than that. That qual. session was just a SNOOZER."

When asked whether we should do heat races or duels like Daytona, @ Dega. He was open to it, said whatever makes fans happy.

I like the idea of the dual races like Daytona. Even if you have a single car running 200+ mph around Talladega by itself, there's nothing exciting about that. Throw more out there than that, then you're talking.
