Dale Earnhardt Inc. has signed Ron Fellows to drive in a forth DEI team at both of the road cources in 2003. He will also be used as a coach for all three DEI drivers on the road courses. No sponsor or number for the car has been given at this time.

I thought maybe you were gonna say Snoop Doggy Dog was back in action.:p

Ron Fellows is an excellent road racer, and this is a very smart move by DEI.

Ron Fellows already helped coach Michael Waltrip for Watkins Glen this year, looks like they've decided to hire him to coach each of the drivers, and in turn are giving him a ride. Great idea.

Good to see this roadster get a shot. DEI will put some good equipment under him and I bet he will do well in the 2 races he will be in.

RPM, Where doesn't Mikey need a coach? :p

The way I read this, Ron is going to be entered only in the two road course races, Watkins Glen and Sears Point (Infernal Raceway).

Did I misread it?

If not, it is a good move. Given something near decent in the way of equipment Ron will most likely easily pay for himself at those two races.

If I did misread it, and DEI is planning a more extensive schedule for a fourth car, it might not be good move. DEI has all the teams their programs can handle as it stands right now IMHO, maybe more.

So he's only entered in road races? but he would coach the other drivers too. why not just run him for more then the few road races?

He will only coach them on the road courses.

I mean be honest, no matter what your opinion of Jr , Mikey and Steve may be, Ron really could not teach them anything about oval track racing.

Ron, Boris Said and Scott Pruett have all not only raced for teams at the road courses, but served to help teams and their drivers setup and understand the road courses.

HS, I read it the same way --- DEI will enter a 4th car just for the road races.

I would imagine he would be free to race in other series in between coaching the DEI drivers. Let's face it, they could use some help on the road courses. LOL

They got theright person to help themn then that aint a regular

Ron is one of those drivers that is trapped in the role of the road course racer. Ron Fellows and Tom Hubert can race on ovals (especially Tom), but they are noted for their superior road course skills. But I think hiring Ron for two races was a really smart idea, and I think it's going to pay off for DEI.

And Ron Fellows in a DEI car at a road course. Wow, he's going to be good.

Great news for Ron! I can't wait to see what he can do in a good Cup car at these road races.

I also think it was a good move to bring him in...I think DEI should put him in a bush ride when he is not running w/c road courses.

bush has two road races also dont they?

LOL! Yeah, I even believe Jr. made a comment this past year about not liking the hired guns. I guess he loves them now.

I'm a former Canadian so I have to root for good old Ron!

I don't like the hired guns........hmmm!! A little awkward for me, huh?:D Oh well, I can always justify it by saying he's part of the DEI team as a "technical expert"!! Think that'll fly, Paul?:)

Hired guns have bothered me. But this is a smart move.
I will admit I am a little (well maybe alot) biased toward DEI.

Ron will do well in a DEI car, he almost won at the glen a few years back in the 87 car.

You have found comedy tonight, thats good Wrangman.:D

Well, now I'm waiting for that picture of your third boob!!:(

It's a shame, just like Bushwhackers they keep a couple of regulars out of a race. About the only thing good about it is when these hired guns get spanked by a regular. Next will come short track specialist then super speedway specialist. Pooh on them.

I'm not sure people were meant to have three boobs, but it could be interesting to see nonetheless...

So back to racing...

I like Ron Fellows and some of the "hired guns" for the road courses. It's a shame they aren't given a shot at some of the other tracks. We have some current Cup road course specialists like Ricky Rudd and Jerry Nadeau that race full-time, I think Ron Fellows could do pretty well full-time if given the opportunity.

Most of the time you are not going to see "hired guns" in Winston Cup racing. Drivers are out there trying to win championships, and their teams are generally committed to their drivers. Yeah, there are some road course specialists out there that will try to make their name be heard for a weekend, but teams know that the biggest advantage is to have a full-time driver that can also run well at these types of tracks. That's why team DEI is hiring Ron Fellows, to teach their team regulars how to best run the track. In form of payment, they give him a ride to try and get himself in. I don't see a problem with it.

Well, I think the regulars should learn the road courses. Maybe DEI hiring Ron will get the ball rolling in that area!:) Plus am I to understand that Ron will be driving for DEI as a 4th driver? He's not bumping any of the regulars to race in the road courses? That sounds a little different from what has been called "hired guns" in the past.......he could get the team more points and money. But, if he's not taking a race from the regulars, then he's not a "hired gun" by the regularly accepted way!! More I hear about this the better I like it.:)

And this is coming from someone who has been rather vocal in the past about both "hired guns" and "Busch Whackers"!:)

I heard on the tail end of Totally Nascar that Boris Said will be attempting to qualify the #67 Jasper Engines car in the Cup race this weekend at Homestead. So it sounds like one hired gun is getting a chance at an oval. I'd like to see the same thing happen for Ron too, but it may be a little too late in life for him to get his shot in Nascar. Ron reminds me a lot of Kenny Schrader...he loves to race and will drive whatever he gets the opportunity to!

My best guess would be sponsorship reasons. I think if they found a sponsorship DEI would put him in the Busch races, or better yet just have him drive Mikey's 99.

IF<<<-----BIG IF.....they give Ron a real car that will run the distance the other kids don't stand much of a chance. As far as the coaching thing goes I don't know but when a guy can almost take the big boys doing a couple one-offs in a one a year type car, just stop to think what he could do in a real one.

Yup, nice move. Ron is as good if not better roadcourser than any of the regular cup drivers.

you opinions and mileage may vary
