So he's going to start and switch out at Talladega. Does anyone know if he'll be in the race full time at Darlington? And if Brian Vickers goes and wins after they swap... who gets the win?

I bet even Hamlin wants to know if he'll be in the race full time @ Darlington.

The driver that starts the race would get the win. It's happened before ironically with Denny Hamlin. In 2007 Denny Hamlin replaced Aric Almirola in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at The Milwaukee Mile; because Almirola started the race he was awarded the points and credit for the win even though Hamlin drove the car to victory lane.

I was there that night. As I recall, same thing happened the year before at the Nationwide race at the Mile, but Hamlin's helicopter arrived minutes before the command to start engines and he was able to start the race and get the points for a P2 finish. As for 2007, I remember hearing later that Almirola went back to the hotel and wasn't even at the track to celebrate with the crew when Hamlin put that thing in victory lane.

That car was sponsored by Rockwell Automation and they're based in Milwaukee and had a massive (HUGE!) hospitality tent at the track that night in between turns 1 and 2, and so there might have been pressure to have the regular driver there in front of the sponsor's home turf. Aside from the regular Buschwhacker running for Nationwide points of course.

Ok here is something to think about IF a team starts driver A and switches to driver B what would stop a team from doing that every week? Lets say you have me as a driver that's starts the race and you have TRL that's a lot better than I am,what would stop a team from switching and putting better drivers in to finish all races?

I'd fire you and hire TRL to drive my car. :p

Why would your scenario even be considered as an option for running a team? It doesn't seem realistic at all. Maybe it's just me?

What would be the point?

IMO he's crazy running Talladega, the big one can happen at any time.

He needs points at this point (no pun intended) anyway if he wants a chance at making the wild card. Like Smoke said, Talladega is a great place for a switch.

If he wants any chance of making the Chase, he has to get back in that car ASAP.

Hamlin is only six places back from Stewart. ;)

If Hamlin can rip off a couple of wins and get in the top twenty he will be fine.

The whole point in starting the race is for Denny to get points. He doesn't have to run at the point, where he is more likely to get wrecked and defeat the whole point of trying to get points. Where ever he starts, he'll drop back to the rear at some point because it's pointless to run up front when he knows he'll get out of the car at some point.

UPDATE: NASCAR confirmed that medical clearance has not yet been given for Denny Hamlin to return to racing the #11 FedEx Toyota (many sources on Twitter)(5-1-2013)

I can remember watching this race with my wife. We were both pi$$ed to see him pulled from the car in favor of Hamlin.
When that happened was when I lost what respect I had for Hamlin and the entire organization, like TRL I was some kinda pissed and that has a lot to do with me being an Aric Almirola fan.

He needs to look at the big picture. You don't mess around with back injuries. He has a kid now, one not so big big one could not only end his career but put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
I'm not a doctor and haven't been at a Holiday Inn in many years but wonder why he didn't take this time to have his disc problem fixed. I had ruptured L 4 and 5 and had surgery done in the mid 80's, the old fashioned way. I have a 5 inch long scar and was laid up 2 months. I had a office job.
My friends kid had the same L 4 and 5 done arthoscopically[sp?], two little scars from the "holes" and he was back to work the following week as a heavy equipment operator.

I wonder if he'll get lapped early. Some of these plate races start off with a long green-flag run and if he loses the pack to draft alone with Stremme or McDowell or something he could be in trouble.

But why, just put the best driver in to start the race.

Like a baseball pitcher?

We could have "Front Row" Joe Nemechek qualify the car and then "The Closer" Kevin Harvick drive the last 20 laps.

If you waited until the last twenty laps to put Kevin in the car you would have to fly him down the road 200 mile after Joe did the S&P thing. :D

Because at a lot of tracks, you aren't making a driver change without getting lapped.

Because first driver might be a good starter second driver great finisher
As a car owner , you put the best driver that you can get in the car .When you no longer have confidence in him ,you try to find someone else . Teams need to work with ,and set the car up for one driver , kinda like great football teams with one quarterback.

Well I would think most of the time the guy they hired to drive would be the better guy in their eyes.
