The wind tunnel shows that you can get better results if you mount your wing up high. The air is less turbulent so it works on your wing better. That's why rail dragsters have tall wings in the back, and also why the 1969-1970 Superbirds and Daytonas had those tall rear wings.
No reason that it wouldn't also apply if you're looking for front downforce. But I agree it could be distracting to the driver.
As far as ugly, maybe so... but not so ugly if it wins you a race!
