The Mutts-have designer dog

What do you get when you cross a Beagle (thats a Snoopy dog) and a Pug? The latest accessory for style-conscious, overpaid celebs the Puggle. The price is high, (up to pounds 550) and the waiting list is long. But for the rich and famous thats a minor problem. Celebs have been toting their mini-dogs as fashion accessories for ages, the most notable being Paris Hiltons tiny Chihuahua Tinkerbell, and Jessica Simpsons Maltipoo (Maltese/Toy Poodle), Daisy. As long as its handbag-sized and cute, itll do and the Puggle fits the bill perfectly (some are just 1 foot long and weigh only 1 stone).
Puggles are not purebreds but, according to David Barber of Brooklyns Puppy Paradise (who developed the breed seven years ago), they are the designer dog of the moment. Its like mixing a Versace bag and a Coach bag together, he says.
Other breeders claim crossing the two purebreds is a good thing, as it creates a healthier dog with a nicer temperament. Puggles supposedly dont howl like beagles and dont have breathing problems often associated with squashed-faced pugs. Certainly their adorable doe-eyed faces have captured the hearts of Americas glitterati, with A-list Puggle owners including Uma Thurman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sly Stallone, Julianne Moore and (the rather unlikely) James The Sopranos Gandolfini.
However, pure-bred devotees are not so happy. Good breeding requires careful planning and research, as well as meticulous attention to bloodline, says Anita Frech, from the Pug Dog Club of America. Throwing a beagle into the pug family tree is outrageous.
Outrageous or not, US Money Magazine listed it as the most popular and expensive dog in America, despite the fact its basically a mongrel. Apparently, its all in the name. Puggle rhymes with Snuggle which makes it infinitely more saleable according to marketing bigwigs. Are Americans that shallow? Apparently so...

If you thought Puggle sounded silly, take a look at some of these other ludicrously named crossbreeds. And no, were honestly not joking...
