Detroit Grand Prix cancelled because of bad economy

"This is unfortunate news but something that Roger Penske and his group have kept us abreast of for some time. The people of Detroit welcomed the IndyCar Series with impressive crowds the past two years and we support the Detroit Grand Prix's efforts for a possible return in 2010.

How's penske have to do with the standing of the event?

Yeah, I seen that. They will add another race in that slot to keep 18 races though.

Im thinking that the IRL will end up at Birmingham, Alabama, which is Barber Motorsports Park. It's a cool road course. They tested down there this year and are going to test down there next year (2009) in March. So the possibility of them having the race there is very good.

Roger Penske is chairman of the Downtown Detroit Partnership which organizes and promotes the event. He has spent a lot of money to help revitalize the area and promote the event.

Would Birmingham even support that race? They don't exactly support anything other than Alabama football and NASCAR.
