Developers greenlight $200 million Aurora racetrack

A group led by Colorado Springs developer Bill Schuck announced plans Wednesday to build a new racetrack in northeast Aurora.

The $200 million racetrack would feature a 1-mile oval speedway, a 4-mile road course and a karting facility. It would seat between 65,000 and 100,000 fans on 1,500 acres on the TransPort property near Front Range Airport, east of E-470 and just north of Interstate 70.

The private venture is expected to break ground next year and will host numerous racing events, such as stock car, open wheel, midget and road racing.

Ahh sounds alot like Pikes Peak to me. That track did not last, why would this one?

Pikes Peak is still around.

It was purchased by ISC in a similar way North Wilkesboro was -- ISC purchased it so they could shut it down and move it's Busch race date elsewhere. Pretty much the same thing Bruton did with Wilkesboro and Rockingham.

That's not true at all Andy, get your facts right. PPI didn't have a Cup date, they didn't need to buy it to move the date, NASCAR owns the dates it can move them. The IRL pulled out from the track and the track couldn't make it and closed down operations. ISC bought the track but the previous owner would only sell to ISC with a clause that ISC could not hold races there.

This is what is going on at PPIR

Please call 719-382-7223 to learn about upcoming events or reserve the facility.

Oh, and 3 late model dates this year.

What I mean is that there is no draw out there. The illegal immigrants that have overrun that area out there at the foot of the Rockys do not attend races.

For other than the fact that materials and labor are cheap in this economy, sound reasons to build new tracks do not exist

Nobody said anywhere that there was a Cup race at PPIR, get your facts right.

the point is NO BODY buys a track to get a Nationwide race either, and NASCAR DOES NOT HAVE TO BUY A TRACK TO MOVE A DATE.

I did not say you said it had a cup date but you certainly implied it with that dumb statement. show me one track, ANY track that was purchased to move a Nationwide or truck race for that matter.

The fact is your entire statement was BS

mmm... Spagettios!!!

What a waste of money. What happend to PIKES PEAK? It is probrably a soccer field now. Invest in something else, like GOLD. It's hot right now, everybody wants gold, just look at all the commercials. GOLD, It is so perty and shiny.

The only other place I can recall that had national touring series dates and had a shorter life span is the now defunct Chicago Motor Speedway.

A horrible Chip Ganassi investment but a great tax write off!

Chicago's a horrible place to put a racetrack. :sarcasm: I mean, look at how big a failure Chicagoland Speedway is. :sarcasm:

If we're to use the logic of some other people here, they shouldn't build a racetrack in Denver because PPIR was a failure. :sarcasm:

Like Camp said, Chicago Motor Speedway was a disaster. I guess they never should've built Chicagoland. :sarcasm:

Some people just don't know how to run a track. We've got a great example of that here in Old Dominion Speedway. A lot of potential. It was the thing in Manassas for a long time. You use to couldn't get a ticket if you weren't lined up at the gates hours before they opened. Now, one terrible owner has given the place a bad name. And it would almost take building a new track elsewhere with a different name to get people to come back.

PPIR would have gotten a Cup date if it had the proper infrastucture around it. The area can not handle the traffic associated with a Cup weekend, there is only one way in and one way out on I-25.I know this , I used to live 10 minutes from the track in Fountain when I first moved out to Colorado in 1998. As for it still being around, I was surprised to learn they are planning on racing this year at some point in time. Most likely a late model touring event and some USAC midgets. The proposed racetrack outside of Denver has been in the planning stages for over 10 years, it never happened back when the economy was booming, I doubt it will happen now. It does make sense to put it it where it is proposed, the infrastructure is there to handle the traffic and the location is just outside of a big city and not far from the Wyoming border.

I wouldn't think now would be the best time to be building a racetrack.
