CHARLOTTE, N.C.(AP) —Former NASCAR champion Matt Kenseth is losing his sponsor after 10 seasons.

Roush Fenway Racing says Dewalt Power Tools told the team Thursday it will not return in 2010. Team president Geoff Smith says the decision is not a surprise because of the worldwide decline in the construction industry.

Sponsorship has waned throughout NASCAR over the past year because of the economic collapse.

Dewalt was on Kenseth’s car for the 2003 Cup championship, 18 victories - including this year’s Daytona 500 - and the 2000 rookie of the year award.

I wonder if this will have an impact on who gets the boot at Roush.

Kenseth was the 2003 champ, but has struggled since then. Right now, he's 12th in standings. 10 points away from missing the Chase. But that does make him the second highest Roush driver in the standings behind Carl Edwards.

:idunno:

Luckily he doesnt have as much sponsorship to fill as other teams, as IIRC R&L, Carhartt, and USG take up about 12 races on their own. My guess is they will try to get those 3 to up their sponsorship to some degree to fill the gap.

Roush/Yates mainstays CitiFinancial, Freecreditreport.com, and Dish Networks phones are probably ringing off the hook right now lol.

Another scenario is Ask.com and Academy Sports are not happy with the sponsorship of Labonte and the #96, could see some of those dates switch to the main Roush teams.

I see Crown Royal Purple and gold #17 in the future. Bye Bye McMurrey!

Might explain why talk of David Ragan going to Yates has popped up. The #17 could be carrying the brown and yellow colors next season.

I thought about that also. But would Roush abandon the "6" that was the car number he's had for , like, forever?

I heard today that this was totally expected and work has been ongoing to find a replacement. I don't think this in any way changed the thinking at Roush.

UPDATE: Roush Fenway Racing announced Tuesday that Diageo, parent company of Crown Royal, has renewed its multi-year sponsorship. Crown Royal will serve as the primary sponsor for Matt Kenseth and the #17 Sprint Cup team at 18 Cup events in 2010. "I'm excited about teaming up with Crown Royal," said Kenseth, one of only five drivers in NASCAR history to win the Sprint Cup rookie of the year award, a Sprint Cup Championship and the Daytona 500. "I worked with Diageo's Smirnoff ICE brand back in 2003 and we developed a great relationship. They were a part of our championship season and we were able to take part in a lot of really cool promotions and events to promote messages associated with responsible drinking. I'm really looking forward to representing Crown Royal and continuing that great work." Diageo has been a partner of Roush Fenway Racing dating back to 2003 where Kenseth was first paired with the Smirnoff Ice Brand. In 2005, Crown Royal entered the sport as sponsor of the #97 team [Kurt Busch] and in 2006 became sponsor of Jamie McMurray and the #26 team. "We will miss Jamie (McMurray) as he has been an amazing partner both on and off the track taking our 'Be a champion. Drink Responsibly,' campaign to new heights. We were lucky to have him as part of our team and whatever sponsor aligns with him will have a great person working on their behalf. We wish him well," said Dan Sanborn, Sr. Director, Corporate Relations for Diageo. "We are pleased that we found a suitable home within Roush Fenway Racing for one of the greatest brands in the world," said Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith. "With the conclusion of the contract arrangement with Crown Royal, Roush Fenway Racing's Sprint Cup driver lineup will see #16-Greg Biffle, #99-Carl Edwards and #6-David Ragan joining Kenseth to round out our four approved entries. We are still hoping to be able to transfer the #26 team, intact, to Yates Racing in order to keep everyone employed and racing within the Ford community."(Roush Fenway Racing)(7-28-2009)

Kyle is nose diving early this year, I count him out now. He doesn't have what it takes yet, a winning attitude like Johnson(I hate admitting the cardboard man knows how to win).
