Trevor on Na$car now said the phone rang and now he's running all the cup races as they've picked up additional sponsorship. ???

If so, great for him. Too bad he won't have those winning points from this yesterday but at least he'll have the win towards a wildcard spot.

Bayne unlikely to run for Sprint Cup points: Daytona 500 winner #21-Trevor Bayne said Monday he's probably not going to attempt to run for the Sprint Cup championship this year. The 20-year-old became the youngest winner in Daytona 500 history Sunday with a surprise victory in NASCAR's biggest race. He's scheduled to run only 17 Cup races this season for the Wood Brothers while he competes for the Nationwide Series title for Roush-Fenway Racing. NASCAR rules this season made drivers pick just one series to collect points, and Bayne chose the second-tier Nationwide Series. He can change his mind, but he would not be given retroactive points for the Daytona 500. NASCAR officials said Monday the win would count toward seeding in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, but he would not receive any points for Sunday's race. NASCAR this year changed the format for the 12-driver Chase field. The top 10 in points after the 26th race of the season make the Chase, with the final two spots going to drivers with the most wins who aren't already eligible. The drivers would have to be ranked inside the top 20.(Associated Press), the team has added at least one race to it's 2011 schedule, selecting to run at Martinsville in April, the sixth race of the 2011 season.(2-21-2011

WOW, looks like you can change your mind

NASCAR has already said that he could. Like I said before he would get no points for the win yesterday but the win would count towards the wildcard position should he finish in the top 20 in points.

France makes the change to the point system and it's no big deal - until now!

I'll bet he wasn't expecting this sitation to arise.

No, i don't think so. The win counts for no points, so how would he end up in the top 20 in points without earnig any points?

I guess I can't make myself very clear. Maybe this will help. IDK

From here.

But NASCAR said Monday that Bayne would be allowed to change his mind. And though the points he earned from the Daytona 500 wouldn't count, the victory would count toward determining his eligibility for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Under a new format this season, the 12-driver Chase will feature the top 10 in points and the two drivers ranked 11th-20th with the most wins.

It's the same thing I posted in #6...What don't you get...He gets points from here on out

Take her down a notch there Bucky. I was responding to VaDirt's post. I understand exactly how it works. You and I basically posted the same thing at the same time.

OK, if he can change his mind, then I stand corrected. However, given that, he's still entire race behind the power curve as far as points are concerned.

lol, sorry:eek:

No problem, we're all on the same team here....... most of the time. :beerbang:

Personally, it doesn't bother me a bit if he decides to run full time in Cup and collect points from here on out. Certainly he shouldn't be entitled to yesterdays points because of what he had already declared on his application before the season began. But how can anyone deny this guy an opportunity like this, which by the way, has anyone seen anything official on this new sponsorship deal? I can't find anything on it other than this thread.

Look at it this way though, he'd only be behind Kevin Harvick by 3 points. But then again, he ain't no Harvick.

Sometimes when I read the threads here I just belly laugh.

What would be better for the sport I love? JJ winning another cup or a twenty year old kid winning the cup and dragging a bunch of twenty year old kids into the sport?

unfortunately jeff gordon already did that! :D

No, Jeff did not. Jeff won his first race at 22 and it was not the Daytona 500. Jeff did bring a bunch of women into the sport.

I am honestly OK with that. :D

He won a race that was a crapshoot anyway. I don't doubt his talent but he needs some seat time in nationwide first. Too much too soon can ruin a carrer in this sport. I'm thinking of casey atwood and others who moved up to soon.

I was thinking the same thing.

He should run NW full time and some select Cup races. If he does good in those other Cup races just take the money and run.

Too much too fast can be a downfall.

i'm not talking about jeff gordon winning his first race. i'm saying the success he had at a young age brought a whole bunch of drivers just out of diapers into some of the best teams in the sport.

maybe it is selective memory on my part, but once upon a time those good seats only went to drivers who had put in several years racing as independants in inferior equipment.

Well as usual Nascar does not account for all the scenarios when they implement something, very typical, and I'm not surprised in the least.

If the points don't count why should the victory?

The real question should be who would he run the entire season with. His nationwide owner Roush doesn't have room for another cup team, and the Wood brothers don't have the finances to run an entire season.

I suspect the Wood Bros. will suddenly find the financing ;)

For the same reason they don't count if a Sprint Cup driver selects points in that series but races in the Nationwide Series (or trucks) and wins. In Nationwide, the win counts, the points don't. In Sprint, the win and points count if that is the way the driver makes his choice.

I don't see the big deal here. It looks to me like NASCAR is handling this the right way.
