BROOKLYN, Mich. - Ricky Rudd didn't have much to say Saturday at Michigan International Speedway, but a lot of other people were sure talking a lot about him.
Remarkably, Rudd's plans for the 2003 season now appear to be up in the air again after a snag with his near-deal with Chip Ganassi Racing.
"I sounds like somebody who should be working for the government saying, 'No comment,'" Rudd said. "It doesn't sound right."
One week ago, a deal for Rudd to drive a Dodge for Ganassi's team next season appeared set. Texaco/Havoline had scheduled a news conference for Tuesday in Charlotte to announce the deal, but that was called off Monday night.
By Saturday, a Rudd-Ganassi pairing seemed to be anything but a done deal and the Wood Brothers seemed to be back in Rudd's picture. There were varied explanations offered for what might have happened to the Ganassi deal, but none from official sources.
For their part, Eddie and Len Wood would say only that all along they've said they'd wait to see where things shook out before hiring a driver to replace Elliott Sadler for 2003. Sadler will be announced as next year's driver for Rudd's current Robert Yates Racing team's Fords at a news conference here Sunday morning.
Ford officials, perhaps worried about seeing Rudd win races in a Dodge the way former Ford driver Bill Elliott has done twice in the past three weeks, appear to be making a late effort to keep Rudd in a Taurus. Since the Wood Brothers team is sponsored by Ford through its Motorcraft brand, Ford could provide money to help pay for Rudd's services in the No. 21 car.

Great point Paul, but I believe chip wanted rudd, just not on rudd's terms and conditions. To pay more to him than a WC champ would be unacceptable to marlin.

I think Rudd has over-played his hand and lost what bargaining power he may have had a month or so ago.I personally think he will end up with Jones-Petree.But everything seems to be just speculation at this point.

Well, I agree Rudd shot himself in the foot, but still, it's a sad day when a driver like Idiot Sadler is going to replace him on a great team....
Ricky has slammed all the doors, burned the bridges, and as I said in other threads, schidt or get off the pot.

Idiot Sadler???? WTF did that come from?? Sadler is a very capable driver, and after he has a period of adjustment with Yates, he'll have you eating those words. Hell, he won a race with the Woods...and to hear all you guys tell it, they've been washed up for 20 years! I have nothing against BLab, so I'll refrain from pointing out the highlight of his season so far. C'mon, people, the man can drive as well as or better than most of the other guys out there. He stays out of the fence, out of other people's bumpers, out of the way when he is lapped....Sadler is a class act and a helluva driver. Wait and see.

Point taken. And show ME where he has had the equipment under him. Woods are not what they used to be...they'll tell you that themselves. Winning anything in that car these days is an accomplishment in and of itself. Put Jimmie in it and see if he can outrun Mike Skinner. Put HarYuck in it and see if anyone even knows who he is. Put Kurt in it and see if Jimmy has to worry about spinning him.

Is Darlington a racer's track? Sadler did qualify 6th and finish 2nd there in March. And he finished 6th at Infineon. So the way I see it, if he has the right car, he can contend for top finishes. He just doesn't get the right car often enough, since he's with a single-car team.
