Doctors upgrade off-duty police officer to fair condition
Doctors upgraded an off-duty Kansas City police officer to fair condition Monday after someone shot her several times after she tried to break up a robbery at the Kansas Speedway late Sunday night.
Kansas City police released the names of two of the suspects Monday afternoon. Nolden Garner Jr., 51, and Fredrick Douglas, 66 of Kansas City, Kan., are being held in connection with the case. The KCK Police said there were no other suspects.
Police said the suspects walked into the area where she was working and attempted a robbery. The secure area known, as the `vault', is located near the main grandstands and is where track vendors take the days receipts.
Sources revealed that the planned robbery might have been an "inside job." One or more of the suspects may have worked at the Speedway and known the best time to hit the vault as well as exactly where the vault was.
The robbery attempt occurred around 8PM (CDT) after the race had ended as Speedway workers were preparing to close down the facility. Witnesses reported hearing up to seven gunshots. One man said he heard the whole thing over the police radio.
"I heard this lady screaming. We heard that she was shot several times," Dennis Lyons, told the local FOX affiliate.
Police chased and arrested the two suspects nearby.
WOW, she is one fortunate lady, and I hope she heals soon!
