Direct TV, yay or nay?

cool. I have a TV+Internet package through a local cable company here in Corpus, but I am not satisfied with their TV package. So I am going to just keep internet through them, and pick up Direct as my TV provider.

That's what I did with Cox cable. Direct TV has a first year deal that's really cheap with a 2 year contract. I have the Xtra package.Go here to look at the special deals.

Sweet! I picked up the Ultimate package, plus the sports package. Now I can finally watch my Astros again.
Another tip is when your special rate runs out you can change your package to a lesser one to reduce cost.

Have heard horror stories from others about DirecTV, Dish, and Time Warner. Personally, I've had only good experiences with Dish, and here it was a better deal than Direct.

I used to sell DirecTV. It sounds like you got the best deal for a sports fan, I really like Chiller Network as well and Ultimate is the cheapest package that includes it.

I'm a no contract kind of guy. You have to tie yourself up tp a two year contract with them? That's a big no no and a red flag so you have to be sure that is what you want.

The consensus about direct TV I get from friends that have it is, more trouble than its worth.

Seems like half the time the thing's not working right. Also very laggy.

We just switched to DIRECTV from Comcast a few months ago, and so far, I like it. I'm not sure what package we got, but they must have had some special deal going on because we get more channels than we had with Comcast for a cheaper price. I was wary of the whole satellite thing myself but we haven't had too many major issues with losing reception. I like the fact that they have backup SD channels in case an HD feed goes out for some reason.

As for the horror stories, I've heard them, just like I've heard Dish and Comcast horror stories. I think it's a simple case of YMMV.

You don't have to sign up for a 2 year contract but it's an option so that you can get it cheaper for the first year.

Sometimes they throw in a bunch of channels for free and then later on they start charging you for them, keep a close eye on the bill, they have a tendency to go up when you arent looking

We had Direct-tv when we were working down by the gulf of mexico and everytime a storm came in the cable went out. here in Arizona it works perfect nearly all the time

That's true with all satellite or cable TV contracts. If you have 3 month's free service for a channel either cancel it before the end of the three month trial period or pay for it. I write the channels and details on a post-it If I want to cancel them.

Thats probably what we should have done, got surprised a few times by an outrageous bill and calling them is a painful experience at best

As of right now Direct seems to be the best option for what I want. Basically Sports, DVR, and Channels for my wife. DVR and Channels for my wife was a wash across the board, but Direct seems to be the best for Sports, especially the regional sports channels. Since the Astros signed their deal with Comcast Houston, I haven't been able to watch them the last few years. Now I will be able to. Also both Direct and Dish seemed to be the best that offered HD channels. It boggles my mind that in 2014 all channels are not offered in HD yet.

Even worse is that some companies are still charging you for it.

All the HD channels I get, I get for free. That's most of what my current package has which is the family package.

It's all too expensive for me, but then again...I'm cheap. I think once my contract expires with Cox, I'm finally going to give up on cable. I'll just keep the Internet, get netflix and find all the streams for my sports and the few tv series I watch.

They all seem to have their strengths and weakness or specialties. Dish Network really specializes in foreign language channels, particularly Arab speaking channels. It's a pretty good marketing strategy to focus on such an emerging market. It works great for them. DirecTV really specializes in sports programming and they do it better than anyone. Time Warner is great for internet service (at least in our area, Road Runner is the best thing going), and if you want cheap tv service with no contract it's not bad either. It's DVR service is very limited with only 2 functions at a time and an extremely small memory. They also have a lot less HD channels and the picture quality is not as good as you get with DirecTV either, but if that stuff isn't important to you then it's a cheaper option.

Honestly this would be me if it wasn't for my wife. She has a certain set of shows she watches and can't live without. I offered to download them for her, but she wouldn't know how to watch them when I am gone.

There are few things in this world that I spend money on. I rarely go to the movies, I rarely even go out. I don't go out for dinner. I love my TV shows, movies on tv and sports though. I would easily called it a hobby. I will spend the extra money for television.

Have had them for 3 years...As mentioned previously...More trouble than their worth...Called them back in august to cancel...They gave me NFL Sunday Ticket for FREE...Now im stuck till next August. If a squirrel pisses on my roof, the sat feed goes out...lol...

we were on DTV, and the bill just kept going up and up and up and up. Finally ditched them for U-verse.

I've had them for a couple of months now and haven't lost my feed yet. Guess, I'll just have to wait and see.

We've had both DirecTV and now Dish Network. Both are great IMO.

In our case we switched to DISH because DirecTV wouldn't work with us on a whole home DVR package. DISH would. But that it the thing with the satellite based companies. Once you are an established customer you get very little back as a deal from them. They are both the same. If you sign up with one of them as a new customer they'll give you just about everything.

I am not sure what the comparable equipment is from DirecTV but our setup with Dish Network is a two DVR system along with 3 slave receivers. All five units are HD. All five act as DVR's All five share two 2TB hard drives capable of storing several hundred hours of HD programming. DISH Networks Hopper system uses Sling technology so that whatever device you have an internet connection with, you can watch your live home programming or DVR recordings. A great example is from this past Sunday afternoon @ Martinsville. We sat in the stands and watched the race. After the race we headed back to our truck in the parking lot. We put the Steelers/Colts game on my wife's iPad and watched the game while tailgating off of our home network. Also availble through Dish Network is something called Primetime Anytime. The DVR's autmatically record every single show on ABC, CBS, FOX, & NBC each evening. When you watch these shows off of your DVR recording, they automatically skip all commercials. You can watch the entire broadcast commercial free without having to push the skip buttons. Pretty sweet!

Bottom line..... They are both good providers in our experience. They're just greedy.

Reads like whoever installed and maintains you satellite dish is inept at their job. About the only time that we lose a signal is when we have snow or ice buildup on the dish. In that rare instance it's nothing a quick wipe with the broom can't handle.

Friends have had varying results with their satellite providers, some good and some bad. A lot depends on your location, if you're on low ground and surrounded by tall trees,,good luck. I know at one point in time in the past heavy rain, strong winds or snow resulted in their service being disrupted.
I recently went to Fios and dropped Cox. Got tired of their ever increasing pricing and moving channel to higher tiers that add to the cost.

I had it before. It is a good service. Better than Dish Network. You get more bang for your buck at DirecTV.

I didn't unless I wanted to pay more per month with Dish.
My bill is a wash between the two services. Both are great IMO but there are things that I mentioned in an earlier post that pushed me to Dish Network. Are DirecTV DVR's capable of auto skipping commercials yet? I'll probably make the move back to DirecTV when they provide that service. I think they went wireless but I am not sure. That is a plus. I want a receiver that I can move anywhere around my house without it being tethered to more than an AC outlet.

Thats what they say here. I don't have it yet.
