Dodge Charger back in 2005

Charger submitted to NASCAR by Dodge: A reborn version of Chrysler’s legendary Dodge Charger muscle car could be screaming around the high-walled turns of the Daytona 500 in February — at least one month before a street-ready Charger sedan lands in dealer showrooms. DaimlerChrysler AG’s Dodge division has submitted a new car design to NASCAR for the 2005 Nextel Cup racing season, and is expected to name it Charger. The racing debut could also create buzz for the mass-market Charger sedan that will be launched in the spring of 2005 and is another key vehicle for the Chrysler Group, which is struggling to return to profitability. That’s part of the reason why Dodge has taken its time in developing a new race car for NASCAR. Mike Zizzo, a NASCAR spokesman, said the racing association and Dodge have been in talks about a new design since the spring of 2003. He said NASCAR will give Dodge final approval on the design by Sept. 1, assuming it passes a variety of safety and performance tests. That would make it ready to race in February’s Daytona 500, the official kickoff of NASCAR’s racing season. “The (review) process is in the final stages, and it’s moving along quite well,” Zizzo said. Dodge has raced the Intrepid sedan in NASCAR’s flagship circuit since 2001, but according to NASCAR rules, could not run the car in 2005 because the car is no longer in production. The Intrepid was replaced in May by the new Dodge Magnum station wagon. The full-size Charger, which will be sold as a four-door sedan, is a closer match to the Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Monte Carlo — the only three other vehicles competing in NASCAR’s top-tier Nextel Cup next year. Though the Ford Taurus is expected to be phased out in the next four years, Kevin Kennedy, a Ford racing spokesman said “as long as Taurus is around, it will be our car.” Pat Suhy, GM’s engineering group manager, said the Monte Carlo would not change for the 2005 racing season. The 2005 Dodge Charger will be built at Chrysler’s Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant. The rear-wheel-drive sedan will share the same underpinnings as the new Chrysler 300 sedan and Dodge Magnum wagon.(Detroit News)(7-18-2004)

This is the new Charger that is on the Dodge concept car page.

Sounds interseting, but I find it hard that teams could build cars and test them that soon.

That is a pretty nice looking car. I can see the influence of the old charger very well in that picture

That is one sharp looking car. Maybe even a little better than the original.

This car has been in development for over 2 years, it looks great, i definetly want one. From what i have read it can run on Natural Gas, the same stuff that heats your house. I'm not sure of the specs as far as HP, Torque, and Tranny, but it would be sweet to see it equiped with a 6 speed manual. :bounce: :bounce:

the teams should have no problems "building" the chargers for next season...how hard can it be to swap headlight decals?

Exactly! With the way cars are now it shouldn't be much of a problem.

That is not the design they chose. The design has more of a square front more like the new 300 and the Magnum

P.S. Sorry no pic; I cant figure out how to post a pic.

I thought it was missing something...so I added a little 'something'.....or a big something as it's supposed to be on a charger.

Niiiiiice!

That's much better....the first was a little too roundy for my taste.

Thanks for the link!

The Chargers are gonna look awesome I think. When are they expected in 2006?

Looks like a reworked Viper to me. I don't know, I hate it when Dee-troit throws around Legendary names of past Muscle cars. None of these new versions deserve those legendary nameplates. If Ford ever brings back the Torino I'll puke.

From what i have read the Charger is due out on the show room floor in May or June of 2005.

I'd puke to just cause its a ford, and it was ugly IMO

I like the look of the old Charger's but this one is down on my list.

As i said I would take the GTO over that car anyday. Benice is Pontiac was still in nascar and could use the GTO.

and is dodge goin to use the HEMI in the new dodge nascars? i know thats the main reasion they brung the HEMO back is so they could run it in nascar.

What? You'd take this thing "http://www.pontiac.com/gto/index.jsp?brand=home&pagename=home" over the Charger? Your frigin' Nuts  !!!!

The GTO is nice, but compared to the Charger; it looks like an egg plant! B)

The GTO looks like any other car on the road. I don't see much difference in the GTO and a Chevy Lumina...

I'll take the Charger. (not going to buy one, but if someone is feeling generous....)

Nice looking car. To bad it's gonna look like the Ford and Chevy when it streaks around the high banks of Daytona.

Thanks Splunge, i'm going to test drive one when it comes out next year, won't be able to afford it of course ! Should be a nice car though.

The problem with the GTO is it looks more like a Grand Am, and the Grand Am is just too common anymore. You see Grand Ams and Chevy Cavaliers everywhere.....so the GTO is no big deal; again its nice, and with that power plant under that hood it'd be nice to have, but it looks too much a like a ho-hum Grand Am. They also could've put beefier tires, and wheels on the back since it is rwd.
