Ok, I'm asking this in all sincerity because I'm not the most up to date kind of guy. Does NASCAR have a bigger than normal problem with drug abuse?

The reason this came up is that I recently went to a local bar that called themselves the NASCAR bar of the city. And they do a great job by showing the race on most of the screens and having the audio on the loudspeakers. The thing is, it is in kind of a crappy part of town, and some of the bar patrons seemed like they might be users so I couldn't tell if this was a NASCAR thing or just a bar in a crappy part of town thing.

Walking thru some of the RV areas on raceday, it also seemed like some of the patrons might be users. Again, not once did I actually see anyone using drugs (other than abusing alcohol, but which sport doesn't do that?), so I'm just going off of gut feeling.

Anyway, any experiences or insights you folks could provide would be appreciated.

I dont think so. The RV areas just reflect what clusters of people tend to do during festive times. I dont think nascar has any bigger issue than other similar sized events.
All of this is just my opinion, nothing I could prove.
The bar is just someone scabbing off of Nascars brand, too small of a sampling to represent much imo.

I took a preachers daughter to a Busch GN race in 1989. I told her she would love the race and the people.
Well the guys behind us in the bleachers smoked dope, I could smell it. The police also had to get them to give the flags back to the challenged guy that was selling them.

She hated the racing and probably would have with out that introduction. And she hated my passion to race. So, I missed her for a while after she left, but I would have missed the racing more.

I have met a lot of good people in the grandstands and in the pits. Good people that would make good neighbors, very kind and freindly folks. I have tried to befriend many myself, a good crowd that I have never been ashamed to associated with.

That doesn't mean that some foolishness doesnt happen or even that the crowd always responds graciously to every event. When thousands assemble some sheet will happen, just to many people with all the variables a crowd has to offer.
