I was wondering doesn't cussing on live TV mean a driver gets fined. I know dale jr was fined for comments he made. what about tony, heck even tony has been fined before wasn't after he won the brickyard the first time?? why is he not being fined this time.

I don't Stewart should get fined this time, but NASCAR did suspend Nationwide driver Jeremy Clements for using the N-word when talking off-the-record to an MTV News reporter. That wasn't broadcast or reprinted at all either. So, there is a precedent here.

NASCAR usually only fines the driver when the FCC fines the broadcaster and the FCC has really cut back on fining networks for what happens during live sports broadcasts. The Baltimore Ravens fans' manure chant never triggered an FCC fine (on both occasions) so I doubt the FCC is going to fine FOX for Tony Stewart's "bust his ass" comment. Most of the races are on cable anyways (TNT, ESPN) and it's fairly unprecedented for cable networks to be fined (they can be but they aren't usually). There have been more f-bombs dropped on The Five on FOX News Channel and Morning Joe on MSNBC than any sports series could ever miracle and it never triggers a fine.

If the FCC did levy a fine, it would be against Fox, not Tony.

No, NASCAR has been levying fines against the drivers too for swearing on live broadcasts, too, even if it's cable. Like Andy's signature says, actions detrimental to stock car racing and whatnot. I think it started after Dale Jr. said his naughty word after Talladega in 2004.

Back when they announced "Have at it", they said they'd no longer fine drivers for profane language. Now, they might have secretly fined them but IDK.

They didn't fine Mike Stefanik though.

Brad got fined for his profanity rant at Phoenix. It depends on how far you go.

I think you're mistaken. The FCC has tried to influence cable (FCC under Michael Powell under George W. Bush for example), but I don't think they can issue fines. It's a paid service. If they could police cable content, they could police internet video and satellite radio.

NASCAR yes, the FCC no. The FCC can only levy fines against the broadcaster. However, NASCAR will typically take it out on a team/driver if a network does get such a fine.

I assumed hidesert cowboy was talking about NASCAR and Tony, because like you said, the FCC wouldn't fine Tony.

The internet is a whole different ballpark. The day the FCC regulates the internet, look out.

Well, satellite radio for example. The FCC designates radio spectrum for the satellite broadcasts, but they have no control over the content of it because it's a paid service. Like cable.

What swearing did you hear??? "Ass" isn't consider a swear word much in today's world. They aren't going to fine someone for saying ass.

Where did I say I heard swearing? Yoda said it would be the FCC, not NASCAR handing out fines. I said if there was a naughty word said (which there wasn't), pre-"Boys have at it" NASCAR would have fined a driver for swearing per actions detrimental to stock car racing.

Yeah, I really don't know. Regardless, the FCC has lightened up significantly on fining broadcast networks for profanity on TV during live sports events. Probably their "playing it safe" reaction to a 2012 SCOTUS ruling since FOX, CBS, ABC and NBC don't have prior knowledge of what's going to happen.

If they let the manure chants in Baltimore go without a fine, there's no way they're going to fine FOX for something Tony Stewart says.

Yeah, you're right. They should lighten up on that stuff anyway. Most of this stuff said during athletic competitions is coincidental anyway. It isn't like the broadcaster is intentionally broadcasting profanity.

What exactly did you hear him say on live TV? I can answer that for you. First of all his short interview after the race that was recorded and heavily edited. You only heard what FOX let you hear. They knew Stewart's tendency to go off on a tirade of some sort, from previous experiences, and did the right thing and recorded his interview. ESPN eliminated all of the FCC offending audio and we heard what was allowed under today's guidelines.

I loved Darbys comment on why no fines for anything that happened.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby responded incredulously Tuesday to suggestions that Joey Logano be fined for the way he raced Denny Hamlin and added that drivers would need to get into a “hell of a fight” in the moments after a race to be sanctioned.

“You would hope that in today’s world that if somebody didn’t win a race, they would be upset about it,” Darby said on a teleconference with reporters. “The emotions that follow a race sometime, a couple of drivers at the end of the race arguing a little bit doesn’t create a foul in our world today.

“If two guys get in a hell of a fight, we’re going to have to react,” Darby said. “A couple of guys blowing off some steam and slapping at the air isn’t going to get anybody in a whole lot of trouble.”

“It was the last lap of the race and the last time they were both going to see turns 3 and 4,” Darby said. “They were side by side and (did) everything that great competitors do.
“If somebody was of the mindset to retaliate, they probably would have been lined up nose-to-tail to start with and somebody would have drove into the other car and spun them around. In this case, that is so far from the opposite that it never even crossed anybody’s mind that I’m aware of that paid attention to the race that that was part of it.”

“As good as the racing has been and exciting as it has been, I don’t think we need to jump into the middle of any of that and screw it up.”

fines and suspensions over heat of the moment acts?

i have no issue with no fines or suspensions -- and judging by the media attention and improved ratings, NASCAR doesnt care either

More proof of Nascar being consistent in their being inconsistent.:)

Correct. Any everything else was bleeped out. What Junior said was live in victory lane.

The level of calmness and the intelligence of Darby is astounding. We are in a new millennium and the back assward ideas of the last millennium have no place in modern sports and TV. Anyone that doesn't like good ole EFFECTIVE english words should pick up the remote and turn the TV off (or get used to it) . We have a whole new generation of young and open minded people that we need as fans. They not only don't feel offended about swearing, they want it for that sense of extreme.
Took me forever to get over the metal in their faces and tattoos all over their necks before I finally realized they can and will be some of the best employees I ever had in my pizza place.

Being upset about words is so old fashioned, closed minded and reeks of a controlling personality problem.

So, you wouldn't mind if one of your employees told a customer to shove their ****ing tip up their pimply white ***? ;)

Probably not, because the behaviour the customer had to have pulled off for one of the people I interviewed and hired to act in this way, I probably wouldn't want the in his own world selfish customer anyway,.... depending on circumstances, kid may get a bonus. One of the toughest things I learned in business,"sometimes the customer isn't always right"

I'm not quite there yet.....

These faces are hilarious!!!

Stewart should have been fined IMHO....not just for cussing but the violent bravado that the ahole showed after Joey blocking him when Logano was forced to back peddle coz Kyle was dictating speed to the restart. Tony is an ASS

gotta disagree

seems to me your saying that Tony got off without a hand slap only because the network anticipated profanity, taped the interview, and then showed it only after bleeping out the "unacceptable" stuff

bleep, or no bleep, we all know exactly what Tony said

whereas Junior got burned because no one expected him to cuss on live TV and we all heard it loud and clear

seems to me that NASCAR is once again being predictably inconsistent

Yeah, I'll agree to disagree because the difference to me is that we all heard what Jr. said where we didn't with Stewart. We may know but we didn't hear. I'm a Jr. fan by the way and I was pi$$ed at the time that he was fined.

I'm on the fence about whether I think Tony should be fined or not...but it's really inconstant of NASCAR to do nothing about Tony and fine Denny Hamlin when he politely gave CC about the G6 car.
