Quote:
Citing a possible presidential run, Donald Trump backed out of the Indianapolis 500 pace car driver duties on Thursday, turning over the keys of the convertible Chevy Camaro to a yet-to-be-determined driver.
The announcement was made by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which said Trump "thought it would be inappropriate" to drive the pace car for the 100th Indy 500 if he ran for president.
Since when has "inappropriate" ever mattered to Donald Trump?
Certainly, this wouldn't have anything to do with the public campaigns mounted by angry fans who protested Trump's appearance in what many consider to be the world's greatest race, right?
And this couldn't have anything to do with the 17,000-plus people who "liked" the "We Don't Want Donald Trump To Drive The Indy 500 Pace Car" Facebook page, right?
Nah. Not according to the track's statement, at least.
"I very much appreciate the honor, but time and business constraints make my appearance there, especially with the necessary practice sessions, impossible to fulfill," Trump said. "I look forward to watching the race from New York."
If I had to guess, I'd say this was a nice way for the track to get out of having Trump as the pace car driver while trying to help all parties save face.
